Eileen Crofton
Dr. Eileen Crofton was born in 1919 in Liverpool, England. Dr. Crofton was known for her antismoking campaigns. In 1971, she helped establish Action on Smoking and Health Scotland (ASH), and in 1973, she became the organization’s first medical director. Their work is credited with helping to change public opinion on smoking, and bringing about the smoking ban. From 1975 until 1987, Dr. Crofton served on the World Health Organization’s expert committee on smoking. Upon her retirement from ASH in 1984, she received an MBE for her service to public health. She later wrote the book The Women of Royaumont, a history of a Scottish women’s hospital during World War I.
Eileen Crofton died in 2010 at the age of 91.
