Where does a combat weapon nickname originate from? Take the famous German 88mm antitank weapon, the go to weapon, used by the whermacht in WWII. Assembled in less than 3mins it had a versatile role in fighting enemy armour and planes. But what of its name? Flugzeugabwehrkanone which translated into English means 'aircraft defence cannon' or commonly derived abbreviated word 'Flak'. The German described the 'eighty eight' as 'Acht-acht' or which was another nickname Bomber pilots used in the 'ack- ack' they faced flying over targets. Commando Comic #1525 shows a great cover of the 88mm in action. The use of its nickname probably soften the fear of its purpose in the soldiers and airmen that faced it.
