The writers say it's a loop- but its not. Jess was originally strangled in cold blood- Flynn shot her. There was no second body from RH either. The writers, in my opinion are lazy and selfish. Season 2 was leading toward Garcy and it would have been much more organic to explore that on the side- and focus on saving rufus...
Oh boy. This pretty much just unleashed the kraken. Brace yourself.
Honestly, I don’t care about their nonsensical, bullshit explanations. They clearly don’t get why so many of us are so upset and appear not to care, since they just keep trying to defend it and double down, and now they have put Goran – poor, sweet, human-sunshine Goran, who loved Flynn so much, who said he cried reading the finale and there were things he wasn’t happy with, who obviously wants to make it better for his own fans, who said since s1 that Flynn was a hero and a good man – in the position of trying to calm us down. I don’t believe for an instant that he really buys the “but Flynn did bad things!” line they’re embarrassingly trying to push on us, especially since IT IS THEIR OWN CANON THAT A) FLYNN DID THESE THINGS TO STOP THE BIG BAD, AND B) AS A RESULT OF CALLOUS, COLD-HEARTED, DIRECT MANIPULATION FROM PEOPLE WHO NEVER ONCE APPRECIATED OR THANKED OR ACCEPTED HIM AND LET HIM DIE FOR THEIR OWN SELFISH ENDS. (I don’t blame the Pod People Time Team, but… yeah. This did not reflect well on them.)
Besides, the double standard is infuriating. They literally wrecked most of season 2 to make sure that no consequences stuck to Wyatt, appeared not to understand that he fucked it up, bent over backward to justify his shitty behaviour, then slaughtered everyone else’s characters (including his!) to justify rushing him and Lucy back together. Whereas, apparently, the bad things that Flynn did in season 1 (again! TO STOP RITTENHOUSE! AND APPARENTLY SINCE HE WAS DIRECTLY TOLD TO!) prevent him from a happy ending. Because character development is fake and something he did in the second episode of the entire series invalidates everything (when Lincoln even dies in history, so… I’m not denying it was a garbage moment, but Jesus goddamn rollerskating Christ). For all of season 2, Flynn was steadfastly there for the team, especially Lucy, performing emotional support and making up for his past mistakes, while Wyatt self-destructed into a mess of toxic masculinity and selfishness. To condemn Flynn for season 1 and excuse Wyatt for all of season 2 is infuriating. It was clear all along they had a blind spot for Wyatt, but to see it play out to this level is just… jaw-droppingly bad. But we’re supposed to excuse this because Wyatt “wanted to choose” Lucy and that makes it better.
Hahahahahahahahhahahahah ahahah ahahaha NOPE.
This is of course not even starting to get into the ridiculous, bullshit, misogynist nonsense of deciding that Jessica was in fact Straight Up Evul ™ (after again, THEY SAID AFTER HER RETURN IN 2X03 THAT THEY DIDN’T WANT TO MAKE HER A ONE DIMENSIONAL EX!!!!) and that outright killing her would just fix their plot problems and magically make Rufus be alive again. For a show that liked to call itself so feminist, that is… mind-blowing. (I don’t know if I should expect better from a showrunner that was associated with Supernatural, but still.) That way, saving Rufus isn’t even about saving Rufus. He just randomly reappears as a result of Flynn and Jessica randomly dying to make it easier for Lyatt, and functions as a cringey yes-man for them afterward. There’s no exploration or acknowledgment of what he’s been through. It sidelines a major character of color (who has already been shot/nearly died TWICE) for a really, really, really badly written White Het Romance. And I’m not about that.
What’s even worse is that they KNEW on some level that they’d written themselves into a place where Flynn/Lucy made more sense. They acknowledged it and said the two characters were terrific together, that they didn’t know after season 2 ended how that was going to progress, but they still decided to force the Original Plan ™ when writing the finale, and set about comprehensively tainting everything beautiful and unique and special to Garcy. They reduced Garcia “I Don’t Give A Damn About Wyatt” Flynn to a tragic cheerleader caricature for a ship, just like they did to everyone else, and keep trying to convince us that it was in character and necessary and a logical development for him (and as I said, trying to get poor Goran to do their dirty work, when he obviously wants to make it better for his fans and can’t say anything openly bad about the movie and it’s just disgusting). They expect us to be happy with these bullshit patronizing scraps. I just….
/takes deep breaths, tries to calm down
The thing is, there were still ways to write that and have the same result. You could, if you really had to, have Flynn die and make Lyatt endgame. But it could have been done so much better and more meaningfully and without capriciously destroying a character and a relationship that were much loved (I honestly just think they read Lyatt echo chamber twitter for this) and sacrificing so much else about what made the show special. Especially when it’s the last time we’re probably going to see these characters on screen. How do you justify this “all fans will enjoy it/there’s something for everyone” and then pull this absolute goddamn crock of bullshit? Please don’t tell me you thought Flynn fans (and anyone who was not 100% Lyatt At All Costs) would enjoy that or that it was a fitting end for the character. Death does not equal redemption and Flynn had already redeemed himself in season 2. I don’t need your “he killed Anthony and an astronaut and Lincoln he doesn’t deserve a happy ending” FUCKING BULLSHIT in my life. It’s so cosmically disrespectful.
Yes, I know Goran was available for a limited time whatever whatever. That still did not equate to having to pull this nonsense. Jesus Christ, you could have had him make it back in the Lifeboat and die heroically in Lucy’s arms (and they apparently cut the scene of her grieving him “for time,” while still finding time for 100 other pieces of Lyatt fanservice). Rather than just wandering off and dropping dead for stupid plot reasons, because these writers demonstrably did not think he was worth saving or given the same weight as a character, and especially when Goran poured his heart and soul into this role and said so many times how much he loved Flynn. Even if they did miraculously realise their mistake and offer him to come back if they got more episodes, he might not even want to, because… why would you want to work again for someone who treated your character and your hard work and your fans like this, and threw you to the wolves to cover their asses?
God. Poor Goran. Poor human-sunshine, emoji-loving, sweetest person alive Goran. I feel awful for him. He was so proud of Flynn, and now either way, this is tainted and overshadowed for him. He deserves none of this.
Anyway. This was comprehensive bullshit on every level, and every time I try to get over it, I just get angrier. I can and will fix it, but it still sucks. I was literally one of the first… let’s say four Garcy shippers. I was maybe the second or third person to write fic for them, ever, and I – yeah. I helped make this ship. I was with it from the very beginning. To see them do this to it is almost worse than if they never paid any attention to it in the first place. And they can just go away and take their nonsense with them.
