Sorry to hear about Anton Fier's passing this week. A wild career to say the least, from the Cleveland underground with Peter Laughner and Pere Ubu to the Feelies' Crazy Rhythms to the Lounge Lizards to the Golden Palominos and beyond. And then ... this!
Fier was a part of Herbie Hancock's Rockit Band, a collective that made a sound that remains totally strange and (more often than not) pretty wonderful — synthed out avant-pop-funk-jazz. Future Shock, indeed! Fier was obviously a musical adventurer, happily traveling in all sorts of directions. In the process, he helped define the sound of the 1980s in more ways than one.
I like this bit from Glenn Kenny's touching obit:
I remember Anton coming off the Rockit tour with Herbie Hancock and expressing befuddlement. "I don't understand how you can be such a genuinely devoted Buddhist and do all that cocaine."
