How is it the Oscars already? It has been such an exciting red-carpet season so far, especially for the new fashion-darling Lupita Nyong-o…
From clean white Calvin Klein at the Critics Choice, to that caped scarlet Ralph Lauren at the Golden Globes and most recently, the emerald green Dior at the BAFTAs; can this girl do no wrong? What will she be wearing on Sunday? Maybe Miu Miu (she is the new face for SS14 after all) or another amazing Dior gown (will J-Law get jealous?). Always one to push her styling on the red-carpet, I can’t wait to see what Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett chooses, this year alone she’s gone classic in lace Armani Prive and contemporary in pink and rose gold Givenchy; I would love to see her in a Brit designer, she does love Alexander Mcqueen so watch this space. Rumour has it that Leonardo DiCaprio is a serious fan of hers and so am I; Margot Robbie will undoubtedly look ultra-feminine and sexy this Sunday (didn’t you love her in embellished Gucci at the Golden Globes?) Lights, camera, it’s nearly go time.
DO
- Wear colour, yes nude and soft blush/beige/neutrals are safer but to tip-the-top of those best-dressed lists you want to embrace a colour that suits you; yes Amy Adams in stunning cobalt blue Antonio Berardi at the Screen Actors Guild, I am looking at you.
- Build up a relationship with a designer whose collections, cuts and colours suit your shape and style, there is a reason Renee Zellweger is always in Carolina Herrera and Zoe Saldana loves Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy; they are their red-carpet go-tos.
- Be experimental. Look to Cate Blanchett for inspiration, she always gives a stunningly innovative great red-carpet look (especially in Givenchy.)
- Accessorise with diamonds, as Marilyn said they are a girl’s best friend and this season I have been lucky enough to wear Jessica McCormack’s designs; they’re red-carpet essential.
DON’T
- Choose the Oscar red-carpet to make a fierce style statement, if we look back over time at Bjork’s fake swan and flesh-coloured body suit in 2001 (love her for it) or god forbid Kim Basinger in a satin one-sleeved one-gloved gown in 1990; I’d say it was better to stay true to your style and what you feel confident in.
- Wear a hat. Celine Dion thought it was a natty idea to wear a Dior tuxedo backwards with a hat and sunglasses, which immediately put her right at the top of every worst-dressed list in the world in 1999; I say keep your hair beautifully simple.
- Try and be super-sexy; boobs, bums and too-high-thigh-splits will look trashy, let us all love Cher for her sheer, sequinned, tasseled number back in 1988, and learn.
- Go too on-trend; you are never going to be happy that you chose lace-insert neon, grungey leather or gothic. Be inspired by the classic beauties of today’s red-carpet like Amy Adams and Gwyneth Paltrow (let’s just ignore the nipple-flashing Alexander McQueen that she wore in 2001.)
