Forged in the Stars

Year 33

Eshy’la flapped her elegant wings about the night sky: her feathers embracing the darkness embroidered with silver, twinkling stars that shimmered beside the ghostly full moon. Her translucent jade form swirled down towards the lush grass her mistress was laid upon. The elf crossed an arm over her chest to allow the owl to perch. Her head rested upon the belly of her snoozing frostsaber. The gorgeous beast slept soundly as she cushioned the elf’s head: its thick snowy fur was slashed with thorn-shaped black markings, its massive paws twitching occasionally as it dreamed of the hunt. The Darnassian forest was quiet, only pierced by a lulling song of a bird or the rustle of wildlife high in the treetops. The elf gazed up contently. A mighty war had been won and she had the treasured company of her beloved animal companions, yet she felt an ache in her soul that reminded her she was missing a piece. She extended her arm to allow her owl to take flight once again and tucked it back in, a fist clenched against her chest. A thousand memories danced as she studied the intense shining lights of the sky and recalled each and every constellation, mouthing the names of each wordlessly to herself. The stars that etched themselves into familiar clusters upon heavens had been memorised and she knew the names of each and every cluster - except for that one.

Eshy’la circled around array of lights she’d never seen before. Twelve stars had appeared as if from nowhere into the universe. Using her elbows, the elf lifted herself up as if she could bring the starry band closer to inspect. Her eyes moved from one to the other, following the trail up and down in jagged shape. She gasped and touched her own face. She knew these marks, not those of the sky but those that adorned her face. Some way, somehow, the Mark of the Serpent had been stitched into the night sky, beaming more fiercely than any of the others. Bewildered, she retraced then over and over, thinking she had been mistaken and these were just random dotted stars that had no meaning. But the curved lines that created two distinct elven marking continued to glimmer within the black. She reclined, unable so much as blink as she pondered how this new constellation could possibly be there. How had Azeroth created this, or who could have the assets to change her? And then she knew.

“Illidan.”

Golganneth dragged his mighty blade across the sky like a quill swooping words over parchment. Shaping the universe was somewhat of child’s play and this simple gesture has been as easy as taking a short walk on a spring morning. Silver sparks flew from the sword as it cut into the blackened heavens, fizzling out as quickly as they had been made. It took mere moments to change the earth below for all time and was done with ease. He turned to his companion and nodded a silent confirmation that the task had been done.

“Thank you, Lord of Skies. Your gesture is most appreciated.”

“I do not see why you would ask this of me. But it was a small request. What will you be calling your new constellation?” His companion gave a nostalgic grin.

“Mywin’s Virtue.”

As the expansion draws to a close, I think my proudest achievement in Legion is the series of increasingly bizarre raid advertisements I began running in a community Discord. Good times.
