Why Gaster?
Valid question. Short version is that I got into Deltarune finally, which led me to remembering the tumblr sexyman Gaster (aka how the fandom had it down bad in one way or another for this weird easter egg of an anomaly). Art Fight allows AU versions of canon characters, and after flipping through pages of Frisks, Kris's Tennas and the-many-faces-of-Spamton I wondered if there was any Gasters...and there are! Less than some might think, bit there def are.
[ Above is the final version of the attack! ]
Anyway, I think its cool when people make AU versions of characters! I bookmarked the ones that stood out to me the most and went from there. Not all of them were drawn this time around (lord there isn't time) but next year..it'll be a Gaster sweep!! (Maybe.)
The Process
Sorta sped-run through these. Knew I wanted to make it a gif (final version, see below). At first the different Gasters were going to be speaking to another character, or to the viewer, but I wasn't sure if that would be out of character for some of them (how they speak, if they speak ect) so I opted to use a quote associated with Gaster. I had picked 13 characters (pun not intended), only realizing afterwards that the lack of color or detail on some of them made it hard to show the differences in design when set next to more detailed or colorful designs. Thats primarily why I chose mixed media- and focused on their faces + some sort of setting/vibe in the image- allowing me to anchor each design (in theory) in different universes, which would (hopefully) automatically give the view the impression they're looking at different versions of the same character.
Photo of artwork before it was scanned and had digital elements added! Colors are more vibrant in person.
If I had more time to work on this I think I could have done waaay more than I did! The plan was to do some in traditional mediums with some digital elements, and the rest on my computer in different styles. The fully digital ones got the boot- I just don't have time- and I focused the rest of my free time (this was all done in like 6 hours on Sunday) to clean up the art and shove it together. And I mean! It worked I think! Lotta shoulda coulda woulda- but for the time I spent on this (and came up with the concept, allowed paint to dry ect) I think this looks pretty cool
Wrap-Up & Materials
Drawing Gaster is like, really fun. Who knows, maybe you'll see some more art of him from me- or at least of some of the various Gasters out there. Who can say!! Not me! I'm too sleepy lol.
More AF posts to come next month!!

The Process
Most of the time when I do trad art I'll do a rough sketch in marker or pen, sometimes pencil/colored pencil. This time around I went a little old school (for me anyway) and tried my best to be intentional with my lines! It can be tricky to plan out with pen- esp when you won't be using white out! Some of them I added in black way too early- that would bite me in the ass later haha!
Working like this can be a little tricky (for me anyway) because I feel like I need to work backwards. In my minds eye I can see the final layer of inks or lines that will help pull everything together, but I need to build those layers underneath the lines before I can actually line it. Once I got into the groove of things it came easier, but some of the illustrations were a little trial and error.
At some point I went "fuck it get the gouache" and broke out my himi palette! I purchased this last year and have made it a soft goal to try and finish this dang thing by next Art Fight at the latest. (I'll do another post on himi gouache another day.) This really helped with the areas that I fumbled with, or sections that weren't popping as much as I wanted them to. In my final versions the bottom illustration had the most gouache on it, which really pulled it all together!! The only illustration I did any major digital painting on was the top-right portrait of Nacht- his artwork didn't look bad or anything, it just didn't have the level of oomph I wanted, which happens with trad art sometimes (and vise versa)!
Wrap-Up & Materials
Ngl, I really wanted to go into Art Fight with a BOOM! I wanted to roll in, do some crazy illustration to show how much I loved some of these characters...and then life happened LOL! I also did not plan on joining AF this year, so idk in what reality showing up with some massive painting was realistic lol. Still- I AM very happy with this art! Every time I flip through my sketchbook I get to see this, and its a nice reminder of having fun with my art.

The character on the left belongs to Daridaan & the character on the right belongs to Bog_Art! More on the art below the cut!
These were both quick lil warm-up experiments! They're painted on lined notepad paper and had very little touch-ups (I think I just adjusted the color since the scanned faded them a bit). It never ceases to surprise me how versatile gouache and colored pencils can be! The mediums really helped carry the vibes of both characters (who have very VERY different energies)!!
For anyone curious; for both characters I did an under-sketch with markers (water based) that I then worked on top of with a combo of paint/pencil! I knew I wanted to use ink or colored pencil to add texture/lines/highlights, so I tried to help my future self with color placement. You can see some of my process above!
