I saw a handsome stranger at grand central market, alone and friendly in the crowded line. He looked like someone I would like to be friends with, interesting and kind but a little quiet and soft smiles. I have kind of told myself to say something to people I see. I find myself thinking, 'you look kind', 'you look beautiful'. And I think about how good it can feel when a stranger with no gain, just passing by, compliments or tells you something of that nature. Not with intent of response or anything, but just a simple line. And then on their way. A girl with light eyes and folded hair on the Bart a few months before, she was gorgeous, So I told her. This man now in down town LA, folded jeans and boots. He shifts ahead of me and worries his fingers in his hand a moment like he's not sure what to do with his hands till it's his turn and he beams pleasantly at the woman behind the counter. He seems kind, soft spoken, open, and cute. When it's my turn I got my order to leave, I found myself telling myself 'tell him', because if I didn't I'd find myself thinking about it all day. Wondering if he would've gotten that feel good moment I feel when someone notices me and says hello and I look cute today. Or how I feel when I tell someone and see them smile? Hearing it from a stranger gives a whole new context to a compliment. Why do I get shaky and anxious with a rush of nerves for something that I don't feel guilty for, and for someone I'll never see again in a 3 second interaction? (I dislike this about myself. Even asking for a pencil from someone makes my stomach roll.) I told him and I walked away bundled up in nerves, nearly dropping my Thai food as I slipped out and back into the current of people, even though he had been surprised and smiled and said thank you- he had been happy- which I wanted, I am feeling like I did something immeasurably frightening. It's small. Just "hello you are very cute, have a good day." But it felt like leaping out of plane even as the words came out of my mouth. Something I've only done a hand full of times and I always feel this way. It's adrenaline and anxiety I get by saying something- talking to a stranger. To anyone. But I do it anyway. When it clears I feel good, content, brave. I practiced speaking out loud, to people I don't know, in a public setting. I've done this only a few times, thinking about how I don't really know people who do this sort of thing. See someone attractive or see someone interesting and tells them so. I thought doing this maybe feels good to them, the few people I work up to speaking to, a confidence boost- but sometimes I sit here and think I may have given them a boost for the day, but by smiling at me and being happy, they're helping me be less afraid of people.
