Some tips for Korean names

We NEVER call anyone just by the family name. Unlike Japan or America where there are millions of family names and everyone call each other by family names if they are not close, there isn’t much family name diversity in Korea. About half of Koreans are Kim, Lee or Choi. A family name can be used only with a title.

If we are close, we can call each other only with first names. However between guys, this is considered to be very ‘gay’, or for joking, or for the little kids, or when they are REALLY good old friends. Even family members often use full names to call those who are younger than them. There ARE younger siblings who use full names to call older siblings... It often means they are NOT friendly to each other. 

-Ssi, a Korean honorific word, can be used to both male and female. It often translated to Mr. or Ms. But it’s quite a rude way to call someone just with the family name and ssi (like Kim-ssi). Never call anyone in front of you this way because it means that you think he’s lower than you. It can used in news to refer people though. The right way is to put it after the full name(Kim Minji-ssi) or if you are a friend, just with the first name(Minji-ssi).

Most family names have only one syllable, and first names are ‘usually’ consisted of two syllables. There are one syllable or three syllables first names but it isn’t very common. You can name your kid as long as you want though, but trust me, it isn’t a good idea.

Usually the first names are consisted of two Chinese characters with good meaning. There is also a style which a whole same generation, or siblings, of a family shares one same letter. There are people who use pure Korean words for their name, though. This way got popular from 90s and now many people have pure Korean word names too. I myself have a pure Korean name.

Almost nobody uses ‘K’ sound (ㅋ) in a first name. I think it’s because it makes a funny sound.

I ‘personally’ HATE when we (or you) call a pure Korean man Hong Gildong ‘Gildong Hong’, okay? I mean, it’s our way to put the family name first, and no Korean calls Harry Potter ‘Potter Harry’. Of course many Koreans use the opposite way when we are in other countries or talking to westerners, but I think you should understand our style. By the way, by the official rule of writing Korean name in alphabet says ‘Hong Gildong’ or ‘Hong Gil-dong’ is the right way to put it in. Not ‘Gildong Hong’.

If you see any Korean name written like ‘Hong Gil Dong’ or ‘Gil Dong Hong’, don’t get confused, we DON’T have a middle name okay? This way is not recommended because it can confuse westerners. If we want to make the syllables seem right, we have to use ‘Gil-dong’ way.

If a woman’s first name ends with ‘-ja’, probably she’s about 50-60 or more. You know many Japanese girls’ names end with ‘-ko(子)’. We read  子 ‘ja’ and this girl’s name style is from Imperial Japan’s cultural genocide, when they forced Koreans to have Japanese names. Now those ‘ja’ names seem to be very old and rustic to the younger generation.
