Hollywood Cemetery
The Unitarian Church is the second oldest in the city, built for the first time in 1772 and rebuilt in 1854. Pathways here are maintained for visitors, but the plots and the grave markers have been given over to nature. Vines, shrubs, and trees grow among, around, and through the cemetery.
Spooky story time - As the legend goes, Annabel met a sailor stationed in Charleston, by the name of Edgar Allen Poe. Annabel's father did not approve of the relationship and tried vehemently to keep them apart. Apparently they secretly met in the cemetery. Poe was transferred north and the couple never saw each other again. Annabel soon succumbed to yellow fever. Poe was grief stricken and came to pay his respects, but the grave was unmarked. Her father had the entire plot dug up and left Annabel's unmarked so he would not know which grave was hers. Poe was so distraught and later penned his famous poem, "Annabel Lee". Annabel's ghost has been seen wandering the pathways in search of her lover, Edgar.
