Finding New Vessels for the Cosmere Shards

As requested by @enormous-fuck-you-dragon :)

There are 16 Shards of Adonalsium, and they all have or had vessels who held them. But let's say we had to pick new vessels for each of the shards, without a care for the person's planet of habitation, status in canon, or whether the shard even exists. Here's who I think would make a good vessel for each Shard! ...For a certain definition of "good."

1. Preservation: Lift

When Lift visited the Nightwatcher, her wish was to remain the same. She didn't want to turn into someone whom her mother wouldn't recognize. And with her power of Regrowth, Lift can even restore someone who has died back to life, as we saw with Yanagawn. Preservation's Intent is prevent change, to keep things frozen and the same forever. Had Lift someone happened upon the Shard when she was younger, before she (ironically?) changed, I think she could have been a good match for it. ...Maybe too good of a match.

2. Devotion: TenSoon

"Of course she made the dog Devotion" -- the mean reader voice I hear in my head sometimes. No, but just hear me out. We don't know a whole lot about Devotion since she was Shattered, but the sense we get based on how her power acts is that she was all about service to those she loved. TenSoon was incredibly devoted to Vin, so much so that he was willing to give up bodily autonomy (by letting her know how to directly control him) and even give up his life (when he tried to remove his spikes to avoid turning against her). And yes, also he is a literal dog.

3. Dominion: Vin

Dominion is about conquest, control over others, power. And so the names that spring immediately to mind--like Gavilar or Telsin or the Lord Ruler--are definitely people who should NOT hold this Shard. Much as Ruin was initially taken up by someone who tried to mitigate its Intent, so too does it feel like Dominion would need to be taken up by someone who understands the Intent but also maybe try to resist it. Hence, Vin. Vin took up power and control as necessary to protect the people she loved, and part of her power was literally taking over the Lord Ruler's creations like the kandra or the koloss and controlling them. Yet at the same time, Vin had a remarkable ability to give up power, as when she refused the Well or when she declined to stay with Kelsier after death. I think taking up this Shard would be terrible for Vin but good for the world, but that's, like, the space where Vin lives. (And yes also I like the Vin & Tensoon = Dominion & Devotion pair; I could not resist that.)

4. Ruin: Raboniel

Ruin was taken up by Ati as an act of self-sacrifice, and Ati was able to turn its Intent more toward entropy and change than toward, you know, the deaths of all. Now, depending on when Raboniel is imagined to pick up this Shard, the world might not survive so well with her taking it up. Sorry, world. But still. I think there's something to this. In the end, what Raboniel cared most about was breaking the cycle--ending the war, killing her suffering daughter, letting things finally change. She didn't care so much about what this took--at one point she released a disease that she thought might kill both humans and singers alike--so long as she could bring things to an end.

5. Odium: Venli

I'm not going to lie--I'm easily swayed and @basket-of-radiants' passionate (pun intended) declaration that Venli should get Odium won me over. Venli definitely understands hatred and passion and excess, all of which are associated with Odium, and also, she just went through SO MUCH SHIT in Odium's service that it does kinda feel like she earned that Shard. Post-character-development Venli might even be able to handle it, too.

6. Cultivation: Kaladin

As much as someone might say, "Who the hell gives Kaladin a Shard that isn't Honor?", I am thinking here of Kaladin as a force of change in others. He took Bridge 4--and eventually, all of the other bridge crews too--and transformed them. He saw that locking depressed people in a dark room was less than ideal, and invented therapy to help them change for the better. When he couldn't be a military leader any more and Dalinar told him to find a new path, he went ahead and did that. Kaladin is constant change, both changing himself and being a force of change in others. And since Cultivation is a force of growth, change, and development--well, I think it fits.

7. Honor: Steris

See, I think Steris would make an interesting Honor. Honor is about oaths and agreements, about laws and power. Steris is autistic, and she memorizes the rules of social engagement and does her best to fulfill them, while still feeling on the outside (and perceiving that others can tell this). She created a long contract for her marriage with Wax. She plans and makes lists and thinks she can figure out how to react in any eventuality. In essence, Steris wants to uncover the rules governing all parts of life--and, if possible, plan even for random chance. Yet at the same time, she understands that the rules are artificial and feels somewhat apart from them. I think this would give her some ability to understand but also question Honor's Intent.

8. Endowment: Tress

Despite her planet getting a whole novel, we don't know tons about Endowment. We know that she is about giving gifts and bestowing talents. And when Tress had the opportunity to ask a boon from an all-powerful dragon, she requested gifts for each of her friends that would help them with their particular talents. And honestly, that's what I got. These can't all be super long.

9. Autonomy: Sixth of the Dusk

It feels like cheating somehow to pick a character from the Shard's world (meanwhile, half the readers are screaming and crying because I keep ignoring planet of origin), but, I mean, Autonomy is all about individualism (Dusk likes to hunt and travel alone), survival of the fittest (Dusk and the other trappers leave traps for each other), defying the odds (see any story he's in), etc. I assume Kenton would also work well for this for similar reasons but I still haven't finished White Sand...

10. Ambition: Kelsier

So far as I know, we don't know anything, really, about the Shard Ambition. They're Shattered, and that Shattering sure messed up Threnody, and Endowment thinks they're all better off without Ambition. There seems to be something about excess--too much Investiture, lingering too long. One assumes they were...ambitious. And if I think about someone being too much and hanging on for too long, well (fond chuckle), I think of Kelsier. I don't know that it would be good for the Cosmere if Kelsier got his hands on Ambition, but I do think that they'd get along pretty darn well.

11. Invention: Navani

I'm a simple woman. I see the word "invention" and I think about Navani, given that she likes to invent things and create fabrials and weapons and so on. I'm going to leave it there. This list is so long.

12. Mercy: Lirin

We don't know much of anything about Mercy. Pretty much all we know is that when Harmony reached out to Mercy about helping with Odium, Harmony was "troubled" by their conversation. To me that could potentially mean that Mercy didn't want to help, perhaps because Mercy wants to show, well, mercy to everyone, regardless of the cost. And that made me think of Lirin, who takes his pacifism so seriously that he will not do harm to anyone, friend or foe. It's an extreme kind of mercy that I think could befit a Shard vessel.

13. Valor: Vivenna

We really don't know much of anything about Valor. She maintains the isolation that the Shards were supposed to have. She's "reasonable." One assumes she is...valorous. I'm liking Vivenna for Valor (especially Vivenna in Stormlight), and even I don't know how much of that is based purely on alliteration.

14. Whimsy: Wayne

We don't know a lot about the Shard Whimsy, but what we do know is that they are not calculating, not good at planning, and that holding this Shard would not be good for one's decorum or self-esteem. Wayne likes to investigate not by planning, but by just going into an area, getting to know the people there. He's funny (one might even say whimsical) but also hates himself and thinks he deserves nothing. I get the sense that picking up this Shard is something that someone does when they think the don't deserve more, and I think Wayne would do that.

15. Virtuosity: Shallan

Listen, I know I should go with someone who is actually from Komashi. But it's the fact that Virtuosity is about artistic intent, talent...and math. And Shallan is not only an incredibly driven and talented artist, but she's also followed around by personification(s) of math at all time. It just feels right! Plus, while the Wiki doesn't say that Virtuosity is bi, Komashi is the bi-colored planet so, well...

16. Reason: Jasnah

We don't know much of anything about Reason, but one assumes that Reason is an intellectual. And Jasnah would be a fascinating vessel, given that Jasnah both prizes her mind and her intelligence above all else...and lowkey fears that her mind is not actually trustworthy.

Something lashes out, then. A surge of something not quite magic, something more. It reaches wildly, and in the next instant, all of the windows in his bedroom are shattered.

"Mercury--!" Cecil is in the room not even five minutes later, greeted with the sight of glass scattered everywhere, and his son curled up on the floor, as if trying to hide from the world.

It doesn't take Cecil long to put things together.

"Come here, I've got you, Papa's here..." he mutters, gathering Merry in his arms as he looks around.

- went out today - walked into 3 different stores in search of a bag for my computer - everything was extremely expensive and I honestly didn't like anything enough to spend all that - came home frustrated cause I need a computer bag for a conference next week

- it was frustrating browsing the shops full of people - it was embarrassing leaving without buying anything after - anyway got home with a lousy humor - remembered there is a thing called online shopping

- oh the joy - found the perfect bag with the perfect measures - of a brand that I know has good lasting products that are not gonna be bursting at the seams in a couple of years - delivery free of charge - half the price of the best bag I saw in one of the shops - package gets here tuesday
