Last year, I had an opportunity to “pitch” a project I wanted to do for a potential grant to go do that project. I pulled out an old comic book idea I had and drew the first picture here. I drew it laboriously over the course of like a week. I spent probably 12 hours on it.
I didn’t get the grant. But it reminded me that making comics was the whole reason I started drawing 15 years ago. So I decided it was high time I shit or get off the pot.
So for the last year I’ve practiced. I stopped gaming, I stopped having lunch with people in favor of having extra time to draw, I stopped basically everything I did with my free time before and I’ve practiced. I’ve taken actual art lessons, I’ve studied from books, I’ve drawn from photos on Pinterest.
I still have a long way to go, but this afternoon I drew the second picture. I spent about 45 minutes on it and was surprised when I was done how much i liked it, and how much effortlessly better it was compared to the old drawing.
All I ever had to do was practice. I wish I would have done this years ago.
