Chosen One

They called him the Chosen one, and made him their weapon. They gave him a sword and a shield, and fed him monsters like meals. They told him his duty was endless, and he must fight until he could no more.

And he obeyed. For years he carried their wars, their fears, their hatred, their hope.

Until one morning he vanished.

No warning. No last note. No speech. No farewell. Panic bloomed in the streets, in the towers, in the halls of magic. Where was he?

Gone.

At first, the world held its breath. Then, the seams began to tear. Simple spells begin to malfunction. Magical barriers start to break. The magic world starts to crumble.

After hope was lost, he came back, not to save, but to make them see. "You failed," he said. "You failed because you built your world on a lie. You told everyone magic was a gift, but treated it like a weapon. You took a child — a child who was different and made him a symbol. Put the weight of the world on him and told him he alone could carry it. You sacrificed a child's childhood, his humanity, his happiness so you wouldn't have to struggle. You failed to be human. You failed yourselves. And your hero isn’t coming back. I’m done being the last piece of your puzzle."

"So you’re going to let it all burn?" they asked.

"No," he replied, "I’m just not putting out your fire."

And the world shuddered. Not because he failed, but because they had.

I've often wondered what might happen if the Chosen One simply walked away. This one could have saved the magical world—but chose not to. Not out of fear or weakness, but out of exhaustion from being used, from bearing a world that never truly understood them. I created this idea a few months ago, but never came up with a name for this mysterious Chosen One. Maybe one day I'll write about him.
