many of the posts lamenting the bright lights, white walls, minimalism… i respect it. everyone has a different sense of aesthetics, and the bright minimalism feels like encroaching corporatism and the continued erosion of personality and comfort within one’s space.

but also. i grew up in a “rustic” house where everything was warm tones, the lighting was all yellow, and despite the windows it was never bright enough. the antiqued surfaces are hard to clean, as are the tchotchkes. wood, leather, and fabric require specialized care. textured surfaces hide stains, which you may think is a good thing until you realize you missed a sticky spot on the countertop AGAIN.

the sterile lifelessness of the millionaire minimalist sucks, but there’s a lot of modern and minimalist design that is not “homey” but certainly has character. i sometimes wonder if the people hating on well-lit, slab-surface houses and rooms have actually had to do any detail work in Warm Soft Yellow 40watt conditions, or had to clean and maintain a cutesy antique-rustic home. my personal feeling is that it gets old fast.
