[still kinda baffles me that white people really just talk to their parents any ol’ kinda way (😒i know not all white people) but it kinda gets the thoughts going…]
the silence that filled the room when Stiles shouted at his dad, “would you shut the hell up and just listen for once?!”
Erica audibly gasped, Boyd said a quick, “nuh uh” and left the room, jackson visibly winced, scott whispering, “dude,” even Isaac and Derek’s eyes widened, eyebrows shooting up in disbelief.
if his parents were alive today, Derek knows he wouldn’t be able to get away with raising his voice to them. oh, Talia would make an absolute example out of him before he could even utter the words.
it’s maybe a privilege Stiles doesn’t really realize he still has; having a living parent. sure, he’s lost his mom and that was entirely devastating but he still had his dad who thought the world of him, would commit crimes for him, love him until his last breath.
“you shouldn’t talk to your dad like that,” Derek tells Stiles later.
Stiles cocks his head, eyebrows furrowed in confusion and letting out a, “huh?”
Derek rolls his eyes but repeats what he said anyways. “you shouldn’t yell at your dad; it’s not nice. we brought him into this world and he’s just trying his best to keep up. he wants to be here, he wants to make sure you’re safe, just- just show him a little kindness and patience, maybe.”
with that, Derek walks off, leaving Stiles to ruminate over what was said. it taking him a few seconds to piece together everything, though, it shouldn’t have been that hard. but at first, Stiles thinking who the hell does Derek think he is to tell him how to talk to his own dad? followed by an ‘oooooohh’.
Stiles would feel bad, knowing it wasn’t Derek’s intention to make him feel bad but the man was right. so he’d send his dad a text apologizing for shouting. he’d probably hesitate for a moment but then send a separate message to Derek, admitting he was right and that he was sorry.
eventually, he’d work up the courage to ask Derek what his parents were like, smiling as Derek quietly told stories of his parents, their personalities, recounting how many times his dad told of how him and Talia met.
he’d tell Stiles how much he loved his parents, misses them everyday and wishes they were around to talk to about anything. Derek also adds, nudging Stiles in the shoulder, that it’s possible a few of the betas wished they had the relationship Stiles has with his dad.
“i don’t take it for granted,” Stiles nods, apologizing again and maybe promising to be nicer and more respectful to his father in the presence of others.
