Aoi didn’t know when she’d first looked at Nene and thought yeah, I want to kiss her. Maybe it had been when they were gardening last spring and a bead of water had been left behind on her lips, glittering like a jewel. Or maybe it was the year before that, when Nene had picked an amaryllis flower and tucked it into Aoi’s hair with a comment on how it reminded her of Aoi.

Maybe it had even been the very first time Aoi had seen her, sitting on a swing smiling off into the distance with cherry blossoms falling all around her.

It didn’t matter, really, didn’t change the outcome. Wouldn’t change the yearning in her heart when she looked at Nene, that feeling of want that filled her when Nene was near. That made her careful not to let her too close, not to let anyone too close, lest they see the broken shards that made up the person she was. Lest they see that the perfect picture they’d been painted of her was nothing but a bald-faced lie. Lest Nene see the awful, hateful person inside and hate her for it, tear her half-formed heart to shreds.
