So I got tired of having so many ao3 tabs open, and I figured hey, I create (boring) software for a living, why not use my skill for some Real good instead?
I made a thing. It’s a small web app to keep track of the ao3 fics I’ve read/am reading/want to read. I’ve been using it for a few months now, and while she ain’t perfect, I think she’s useful.
It’s free, I do not collect data, this is purely a helpful tool for anyone who wants it.
I’ll put more detailed info below the Keep Reading, but if you don’t care about all that and just want to give it a try, here’s the link:
AO3 Tracker
I’m always open to suggestions for improvement and happy to answer questions.
It works on desktop and mobile.
the only reason it asks you to make an account is so you can use it on multiple devices
it asks for a username and an email (basically just two pieces of info so you can reset your password if you forget, the email doesn’t even need to be real. I’m never going to send you emails)
Because it doesn’t collect user data, it can’t process Restricted fics. But that’s why there’s a Manual Add option
It’s got lots of Library filtering options so it’s easy to weed through hundreds or thousands of fics in your library
It can check for updates to fics with the “reprocess” option
It can also keep up with series, and if you add one work in a series, you can tell it to add the other fics in the series to your library
I have very a basic-and-definitely-still-being-worked-on Stats page, just cuz I like numbers, and a rudimentary Similarity page so I can try to find works in my library that are hopefully the same vibe as something else I’ve read (very much still a work in progress, I had to relearn half my degree to figure it out so far)
The beauty of being an ao3 reader AND a software engineer means I can create a pretty neat ao3 fic tracking spreadsheet with automated updates, and things are nice.
But, because I’m a software engineer, I keep adding new features to it.
And, because I’m a voracious ao3 reader, I keep adding too many new fanfics to it.
And now it has turned into a monster that should not be a spreadsheet, and it’s nearly too slow to use. Truly, I think I can hear it crying.
Soooo all of that to say, I’m currently working transforming my monster spreadsheet into a web app! It’s slow going, and maybe no one will want it, but I plan on making it easily available and free to use.
I’ll add progress updates to my blog, so feel free to follow along if you’re interested.
Hello! Have you ever wanted to make a spreadsheet to keep track of the AO3 fanfic you read but it takes too long to enter all that information manually for every single fic? Well boy do I have the link for you!!!
It is not perfect. There are things it can't handle (like when there is more than one relationship tag it will spill) and things it outright cannot do (pull data from locked fics). HOWEVER. A lot of the time, all you have to do is copy and paste a row, insert the URL to the fic you just read, and boom. It will auto populate the title, author, word count, relationship pairing, content rating, and # of kudos.
For the past 4 years I have imported all this data (and more) manually into my personal spreadsheet. There are spreadsheets out there that do this, probably more efficiently and simply. Well mine is free, unlike those, and therefore you get quirks.
Once you do this, you can then very quickly and easily do fun things like sum the # of words you have read, just to scare the shit out of yourself. its a good time.
anyway, it is view only right HERE -> fanfic spreadsheet
just make a copy, or copy what you want and leave what you don't. and have fun :3 in return for my work I'd love to see screenshots of how you use it!!
