So many aot fans seem to have this same belief that any hint of Levi’s underground influence seeping into his behavior is “classist” and they use that word every single time like are they all referring to the same source when they say this am I missing something?? Is there some popular tiktok video out there calling it Classist to acknowledge Levi’s canon background????

It’s so baffling to me bc I’ve never seen this in any other fandom where they’ll call a character with humble beginnings a classist portrayal simply bc they are representing a member of that class

I’ve been seeing some interesting discourse, specifically on TikTok, recently - over whether Erwin would’ve supported Eren and the Rumbling.

At first, I was super irritated by this idea because of course, my love for Erwin drowned out what may have been a possibility given Levi chose him instead of Armin. Like, obviously my precious strong moral pookie would not be in support of a literal genocide, right?

But now I’m wondering. I’ve been thinking about some of the things he’s said in reference to freedom, Eren, and the possibility of life outside of the walls. I’m curious what some others may think. So, do you think Erwin would’ve supported Eren’s decision?

Why did you rate Attack on Titan so low?

after reinterpreting it with knowledge of the author's perspectives on military and nationalism, I found very little of it to still be enjoyable. like, noticing scenes focused on the protagonists berating side characters for not being sufficiently supportive of the military, where the protagonists are clearly meant to come off as Obviously Correct, with an understanding that the viewer is meant to connect that attitude towards real-world militaries... looking at it like that, there's not much I can say for it

With the Attack on Titan Rumbling arc starting in the anime, I think it's important to keep in mind:

Whether intentional or by a very unfortunate and badly-thought analogy, SnK perpetuates antisemitic tropes. It doesn't matter that the eldians are "displayed in a sympathetic light". The Holocaust imagery, like the armbands, does create a clear link with Jewish people. By making Eldians capable of transforming into man-eating monsters, the manga/anime references the blood libel, an antisemitic conspiracy that has been historically used to dehumanize them.

The manga/anime is very popular in Alt-Right groups. There is a clear reason for this. The philosophical question that SnK poses about the division between "the nation and the enemies" is not resolved or elucidated and serves itself as a fascist thinkpiece. (in other words, it isn't directly fascist, but it starts deconstructing fascist ideas and then just stops, leaving the story in limbo.)

Yes, it's fiction. Yes, it can be consumed critically. Different political ideologies are explored in the manga/anime and, interpreted in a certain way, the story although pessimistic, tries to give an anti-war message. However, it cannot be consumed apolitically.

Isayama does his damn best in the last arcs to make genocide seem like the only option. Many other (and better) people on the fandom have already mentioned that diplomacy is never truly considered and that the story corners Eren into a Rumbling.

The problem is that SnK, by trying to be neutral, ends up endorsing very horrifying worldviews. There is no justification for genocide. Any excuses should have been rebutted as explicitly as they were expressed in the manga/anime. But they are not. Of course, there are characters in very explicit opposition. But their vision is offuscated a narrative that forces a lack of peaceful solutions.

Fiction is fiction, I agree. However, fiction also transmits messages, and it's integrated into the large fabric of social discourses. You can watch AoT. But if you keep insisting that there are no harmful elements in the story, if you call yourself a "Yeagerist", if you advocate for the 100% Rumbling (or any other Rumbling), it's time to reflect on why you condone it.

I'm not trying to be rude, but could you explain why the yagerist believe in eugenics? because imo yeagerist are against it marley was the one killing eldians.

Explaining this situation is quite...complicated. Unfortunately you need to understand the concept of eugenics but that is a whole amount of reading in itself. I suggest you read a little on it (The Eugenics Movement: An Encyclopedia is a great start).

Anyways, the Yeagerists are included in the eugenics line of thought when they support the killing of everyone beyond the walls, they are commiting ethnic erasure when they help Eren carry out his plan (and Zeke's plan too! He's literally the face of eugenics on AOT). And this is not something I took out of my head, Isayama was inspired by world war and 20th-century Japan to write AOT. The 19th and 20th centuries were the birth and strength of eugenics.

The message in Attack on Titan is that nobody there is good or bad, they are just societies that live in a cycle of hatred and opression. Yeagerists and Marleyans are two sides of the same coin, feeding into this cycle of opressed-opressor.
