Thinking about ways Erwin could've lived

(S3 spoilers)

It's been a while since i last saw Return to Shigashina Arc so forgive me if I remember the lore wrong, but I've been thinking about ways that Erwin could've been saved without also killing Armin in return. Everyone knows about how there was only one titan serum left, and how conflicted levi was while deciding who to choose, but what if they didn't have to choose only one person to save?

While there was a limited amount of titan serum left, we knew from Rod Reiss that a person does not need a full dose to turn into a titan, as he was able to turn into one simply from licking the leftover spillage on the floor. I imagine that similarly, Armin and Erwin could've split the serum between them to turn both into titans. There might be some side effects to not getting a full dose (i.e. Rod Reiss and his fucked up titan form), but maybe the deformation would be less severe considering it's only a half-dose intake as opposed to only a lick.

Moreover, I also suspect that Rod Reiss' form was least affected by the amount of serum, and more on how the royal blood in him affect the transformation. I imagine that Erwin/Armin would be unlikely to have their titan forms to also be that deformed, considering their lack of royal blood and the amount of spinal fluid they'll have.

Still, that doesn't change the fact that only one person could return to being a human, as only one of them can become a shifter, while the other would have to be a mindless titan. Of course, the reason for this is because only Bertholdt was present on the roof, and he was the only titan shifter present that can pass down the power to one of them. But what if Bertholdt wasn't the only shifter on the roof?

I think if Reiner wasn't saved by Zeke and Pieck, Reiner could've been the key to save both Erwin and Armin. Had the squad captured Reiner for futher interrogation and not immediately try to execute him, and able to prevent Reiner from being saved by Zeke/Pieck, Erwin or Armin could eat him to turn back into a human while the other eats Berthold. In that way, maybe both Erwin and Armin could've been saved. But the tragedy of AOT is that none of us, and the cast, could predict what would happen and so I don't think they could've imagined that there would be a need to choose only one person to save or that it would've been beneficial to have 2 shifters to pass down their powers. If they had known, maybe they would fight harder to keep Reiner, especially since they were planning to kill him off anyway.

I'm also thinking about the implications if both Erwin and Armin were saved and alive. Erwin and Armin on their own was already strategic geniuses in their own right, but combined? They would be a powerhouse, especially once they knew what kind of enemy they were fighting against. I imagine Marley would be more apprehensive to fight Paradis directly too, especially if in this scenario, they managed to take down all 3 of the warriors they sent (Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie), and severely injured one of their war chiefs (Zeke) with only "primitive" weapons and human soldiers that Paradis has. Maybe this could give more leverage for Erwin and Armin to negotiate with Marley or create a strategy that can ensure safety for the island.

I know that Erwin's death served as a good thematic ending to his character arc (Erwin being able to be selfless by choosing humanity over his dreams, finally feeling like he can atone and make up for his comrades' deaths in one last glorious act for the cause), and that it was also a good example of the deep bond Levi and Erwin have (Levi choosing Erwin's peace over saving humanity) but I can't help but wish Erwin could've still lived. If things were different, i think it would be interesting to see how Erwin's survival would affect the series and how the AOT cast would fare in S4 with both him and Armin being alive. Oh, if only it was possible.

Everyone reactions at Armin surviving instead of Erwin pisses me off to no end. The boy litteraly let himself get burn to a crisp in order to stop Berthold and help save humanity. He pretty much "died" a hero here. But because he was (after one of the most beautifully angsty and emotionnal scene I've ever watched) chosen to be relive instead of Erwin, he deserved to be treated like trash? He did not ask for any of this, so what's the point of telling him he was the bad choice. Everybody knows Armin has a low self-esteem, despite how brilliant he is. And I don't understand why Eren can scream while crying Armin's incredible qualities to try and convince Levi to save him but when Armin awakes and doesn't undertand why he was chosen, Eren or Mikasa doesn't tell him about all his brilliant plan, and how, maybe comparing to Erwin he wasn't the "best" choice but he is still extremely valuable and they're all happy to still have him alive between them? Seriously?! Looks like all they wanted what to give this poor boy the biggest survivor guilt ever.
