i have two characters who don’t really conform to traditional gender roles. the guy character has long hair and is gentle, and the girl character has short hair and is outspoken and physically strong. being trans myself, i originally had them be trans just for the sake of making my characters trans. but then i saw a post saying how cis people tend to have their first trans characters be gender nonconforming with “soft” trans men and buff angry trans women and how it ends up being offensive/that this should be avoided unless you Really know what you’re doing?? i’m not cis, but i’m also not a binary trans person so i don’t have the experiences of one and probably don’t “know what i’m doing.” would it be better to just make one or both of them cis, or is it okay as long as i don’t reduce them to stereotypes?? they’re main characters, so in theory they should end up being pretty fleshed out.

I would say as you yourself are a trans author and you are aware of the possible issue you should be fine (as long as you don’t reduce them to stereotypes).

The problems with this kind of thing is that it’s usually used as a way to show how “abnormal” trans people are, and as a way to sperate them from cis people of the same gender. The best way to avoid this though is to have multiple trans characters who are different from you’re mc’s.
