a ball balanced between tsukishima’s fingers, the blonde towering easily above hinata who looked dwarfed in comparison, and kageyama felt the edges of his world crumbling in. a slight pain twitched at his wrist, the faded pain of unfamiliarity blurring into his skin. he didn’t have to look to know the numbers had curved into soft zeros as tsukishima spoke.
what had felt like years of spare time when his was younger suddenly felt catastrophically too close with his supposed soulmate standing before him, looking entirely too composed considering the situation - unless it wasn’t even the taller boy who was destined for him. his eyes slide to the side, focusing on the smaller boy that followed behind tsukishima like an ellipse to a sentence. if tsukishima felt unfamiliar, yamaguchi was alien ; looking at the blonde summoned an anchoring flicker along his palm, but yamaguchi brought coldness.
perhaps tsukishima’s wrist simply hadn’t lined with his own. it was not uncommon for soulmates to become unmatched - one heart belonged to another while the object of supposed affection seemed destined for another. the twist of his arm seemed angled from kageyama’s view, unable to see what their fate would be. and before he could ponder further, tsukishima was spitting a name that caused bile to curl in the back of kageyama’s throat, and he was becoming too stunned to reply to hinata’s indignation.
the moment passed as quietly as a whisper, completely forgotten, even with the fire-licked skin of his wrist burning.
