The first Asia Pacific Design Festival of Creativity by APDF was successfully held on 12-16 May 2016. As part of this, the IAI Design Award ceremony took place at the Bird’s Nest Culture Center in Beijing. This saw design organisations, studios and practitioners from over ten countries gather in China’s capital city, including those from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the UK, Portugal, Denmark, Thailand, Singapore, Poland and Slovenia.

This year's competition attracted more than 1200 entries, of which 22 were eventually nominated. The night saw PONE Architecture from mainland China walk away with the IAI Best Creative Award, while IAI Excellent Awards were presented to LAND Designlab, Ray Wong and Gong Shanwei, Weng Shanwei and Yuan Jiadie.

Meanwhile, Japanese designer Taku Hibino received the IAI Best Humanistic Award, and Taiwanese designer Zen Zhenben won the IAI Best Environment Award. CAFA student Zhang Tiangang was presented with the Design Star Award. >A special tribute to Zaha Hadid was also held, with her project the Dongdaemun Design Plaza winning the IAI Special Jury Award.
