(CLASSIC MAGNETICS) Apes Tapes: 'Split Tape No. 2'
Being back in Portland has once again awakened my musical (aesthetic) senses and hitting the record shops has been somewhat of a homecoming for me. Just last week i discovered a new spot where i was meeting up with an old friend. Clinton Street Record & Stereo is a quaint little shop with a lot of character. I would have probably missed the door if it wasn't for the glowing, neon "records" sign hanging in the window that caught my eye. Once i stepped in, i was right at home and the warmth and the crackle consumed me.
Their record selection is filled with all kinds of rarities and out-of-print wax. There is also a fresh selection of newer records from up-and-coming labels from Woodsist to Sacred Bones, plus a rack dedicated strictly to our beloved Portland imprints.
The purchase that brings me to this post comes from a tape i picked up from the Portland cassette issuers Apes Tapes. Hidden somewhere in the shop's amazing tape collection, i found their 'Split Tape No. 2' which bares the musical stylings of Onuinu and Tony Bambino, both Portland residents.
Having only been mostly familiar with Onuinu's tracks, i decided to take the plunge and see what this tape was all about. Little did i know that a fuzzed-out, electronic, sampling mecca/wonderland awaited me. This is bedroom pop at it's finest, but with a strong groundwork that nods to the dance-floor. Two musicians on similar paths to ingenuity and originality, making the two sides differ at just the right amount, but also leaving each other complimented in seamless fashion.
