Hetalia Language Headcanons

I've been thinking about my headcanons for nation linguistics so I'm gonna throw up a bunch of them now.

Every nation is most fluent in their national tongue. This is a given. Dialects differing from the most common spoken tongue tend to be understood as well; China knows all his language's dialects, though to varying degrees of mastery given how many there are. He can speak all of them passably, though.

In the modern world, nearly every nation is also capable of communicating effectively in English, due to necessity as English has become the international standard.

Continuing from above, nearly every European nation can also speak French quite effectively, since it used to be the international (as in Western world-view international) tongue.

Nations also tend to know their neighbor's languages, though not unaccented, though again to varying degrees, depending especially on relations.

Likewise, strong ties between non-neighbors tends to lead to language knowledge, e.g. Canada is quite good at Ukrainian.

Romania and Hungary are both very good at each other's languages and they hate it.

Moldova can speak Ukrainian almost as well as he speaks Romanian.

America is surprisingly good at foreign languages; he just never really uses this because he doesn't see the need to. After all, English is the international tongue!

All former Eastern Bloc nations can speak Russian extremely effectively. Thank you, Soviet Union.

The Nordics all speak each other's languages, though the other four tend to stumble a bit in Finnish.

Liechtenstein is the only nation besides Switzerland who actually speaks Romansh, and that's just because her older brother insisted she learn it.  Everyone else just doesn't even bother.

tl;dr everyone's a polyglot, just some are more polyglot than others depending on history and neighbors and stuff
