old 2016 sci-fi gercan drabble

The song is muffled, static dampening the music and tainting the sound, but he is singing along with it anyway, yelling at the top of his lungs as he blasts out his eardrums.

They say there is no sound in space, and perhaps that is why the earphones build into his suit sucks so much. Ludwig will say that the resulting explosions as Matthew launches another shot is what is affecting the wavelength, but space has no sound, and an explosion is not really an explosion unless there's some noise.

"Sergeant Williams, can you hear me?" the voice crackles through the earphones, effectively cutting off the music, and the goddamn static is still loud and muffling. "Williams, what's your crew's stats?"

"Lowest oxygen level 23.7%, highest suit damage level 52%, lowest reserve power is at..." Matthew pauses. "7%. Nothing else noteworthy to report, but the crew's having a lot of fun bombing the Wormhead."

He knows Kiku is nodding even without seeing him. "Good. Get back into the ship, and order your men back. I'll be sending Ensigns Vargas and Vargas-" Matthew snickers. "-To cover you. Sergeant Peeters will be out with her team next."

"Roger that," Matthew replies, and pings the little blue light on his arm. The frequency flickers, and then he's speaking directly to his crew. "Hey boys and girl, Sergeant speaking. We're heading in. The Vargas are covering us, and Emma's crew will be out."

"That soon?" Michelle complains, "and we're better off watching our own backs. The Vargas can't cover for shit."

"Shit, man, we'll totally take down the Wormhead if we have a few more minutes," Alfred adds.

"Well too bad, someone is running seriously low on power. Own up; who's the idiot who lets his power get so low without informing me?"

There’re a few snickers, but no one answers. "Come on, we're going to find out when we head back anyway. Whose power is at 7%?"

The silence drags, as more of his crew zap past him back to the ship. The music is playing, he still can't hear the explosions and the song is still muffled, but no one answers.

He stops the music. The crackle of static and then Alfred's bumbling voice comes on. "Er, Sarge..."

"Just spill."

There's a slight hesitation. "Has anyone actually seen Ludwig since nine minutes ago? Like, I caught a glimpse of him as he went round the Wormhead, but that's it."

"Shit, Ralph, you're his partner. Where's Ludwig."

"I don't know," Ralph sounds rattled. Ralph, the man who pets a space equivalent of a tarantula, who laughs when neon flame birds chase after him, is rattled. "I went round with him, but six minutes ago we split up, and I hadn't tried connecting to him since."

Matthew cursed, and signs off. He adjusts the frequency, the blue light flickering faster until he's connected to Ludwig's wave.

"Ludwig, can you hear me?" he calls.

The static splutters, chokes, and continues. He tries again. "Ludwig, if you're hearing this, answer me."

Matthew chews his bottom lip. His crew is supposed to be his responsibility, but he hasn't even noticed the low power and a missing member until it's so late. The familiarity of these missions has made him complacent and too damned careless. "Ensign Beilschmidt!"

The reply is barely there, soft and unclear, but Ludwig croaks, "Sergeant?" and Matthew lets out the breath he hasn't realised he's holding.

"Ludwig, where are you right now? Your power is critically low, you need to get back."

"I don't know, Sergeant, I -"

The voice cuts off, and no matter how hard Matthew yells, all he hears is static.
