I have an older kitty - he's about 13. He was indoor/outdoor most of his life, and is now indoor only. The ONLY toy he likes is the laser pointer! Acts like a kitten again even. But he doesn't engage with other physical toys like mice/etc., wands, or track toy. How can I make sure he is feeling fulfilled by our playtimes?
This is, unfortunately, one of the downsides of using laser pointers. It provokes a heightened desire to chase without seeking the benefits from catching and killing. There have been studies that suggest it is a form of anxiety-inducing response to play without that successful kill.
Offer him toys once he’s done playing to see if he’s interested in them. Please keep an eye out for repetitive motions, over grooming, pacing, things like that. Ideally once you phase out a laser pointer completely, the cat will enjoy play with a wand toy or something similar just as much.
