This is something that is just. So bizarre to me. There's been this shift from people taking responsibility for their own user experience to demanding that others take responsibility for them. I'm not sure what prompted this shift, but it's something that I never saw on lj. Maybe something with tumblr's general format? The whole "sending anons" concept? Who knows.
