Housing is a Structural Problem, Start Treating it Like One

Homes Not Hostels, Tara Street, Dublin The Home Sweet Home takeover of Apollo House has marked a watershed moment in the Irish approach to the homelessness crisis - foregrounding the rights and dignity of the homeless while highlighting the perversity of Dublin's vacant properties, many of them State-owned. A welcome side-effect has been to transform Apollo House from an unloved eyesore in to a symbol of empathy and activism.
Isn't there word going around that NAMA are going to demolish Apollo House after January 11th (presumably to prevent this happening again)?
Yeah I heard that, funny how they didn’t give a shite about it when it was sitting empty. God forbid people would get use out of it!
i havent been here for a while but i just want to say what’s happening with Apollo House in Dublin the last while has given me more hope and happiness than anything else has all year. I’m honoured to be friends with some of those involved, they are literally the best people in Ireland and most probably the world.
It’s amazing what taking action can do to bring people together and fight for a better world. And the response from so many ordinary people in the country just makes it so clear that we’re all here just waiting to be able to do something. I’ve never missed Ireland more than I do right now.

Goss.ie: Glen Hansard, Kodaline and Hozier host free gig to raise homeless crisis awareness #apollohouse
21st Decemeber, 2016
Glen Hansard was joined by Kodaline and Hozier at a free gig they hosted to raise awareness of the homeless crisis in Ireland.
The musicians are part of the Home Sweet Home campaign, an organisation that aims to take over vacant properties around Ireland to house the homeless.
“This was born out of a concern, born out of a pain in the heart,” Glen told Goss.ie at the sing-song.
Also joining the musicians was Irish band Aslan and many others including poets and singers who are homeless.
The free gig took place at the NAMA-owned Apollo House in Dublin city where the artists performed on top of the car park roof.
The organisation have used the vacant building as shelter to the homeless in Ireland and they have asked the government to become involved in tackling the issue.
