What have I been up to the last 10 months or so? Thanks for asking! Well I have been working with the amazing team over @minnowmountain as an animator on #Apollo10andahalf the new #animated feature film written and directed by Richard Linklater. Was an amazing experience with an amazing group of people, and I am looking forward to the premiere, hopefully in December or January. Five times great live action directors made cartoons.

The Critic. D: Mel Brooks and Ernest Pintoff (1963). Brooks won his first Oscar for this animated short about an old Jewish man trying to make sense of an art film (“I think this is a cock-a-roach”) that looked back at his “1,000-year-old man” records and forward to Mystery Science Theater 2000.

The Corpse Bride. D: Tim Burton and Mike Johnson (2005). A gothic slapstick that might be Burton’s truest expression of his vision and one of my favorite Johnny Depp (voice) performances.

A Christmas Carol. D: Robert Zemeckis (2009). A version of the holiday warhorse with Jim Carrey (voice and motion-capture) as Scrooge AND the spirits? Could have been a grotesque mugging festival. Instead it was moody, exhilarating and almost definitive.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox. D: Wes Anderson (2009). With a script co-written with Noah Baumbach and a voice cast including George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and Owen Wilson, Anderson turned a Road Dahl children’s tale into a perfect vehicle for his exquisite neurosis.

Anomalisia. D: Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson. (2015). Kaufman utilized stop-motion animation to dramatize the story of a man trying and failing to find love as a cure for alienation. As insightful as it is despairing.

Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood. 

D: Richard Linklater (2022).  

Apollo 10½ starts out with the premise of a terrible high-concept kids film. Stanley (voiced by Milo Coy) an ordinary fifth grader in a suburb of Houston is recruited off his school’s playground by two government agents (Zachary Levi and Glen Powell) for a secret project: to covertly become the first human on the moon (turns out they made the lunar module too small for grownups). It’s literally a dream job and while the film never actually cops to it, the fantasy of a child who has grown up in the shadow of NASA for his entire life (at one point Jack Black narrating as an older Stan, says “I guess I was What you’d call a fabulist, which is just a nicer way of saying a persistent liar.”) The bulk of the movie is an account of that childhood a depiction as charming as it is meandering. 

Whether you’re charmed or bored may depend on how close you were to being a ten year old kid in 1969. Like a lot of modern childhood stories, the movie is steeped in formative pop culture from sibling fights over TV shows (though everybody agrees on Dark Shadows), cereal brands, bubblegum music, childhood games and other ephemera. But Linklater’s glowing, rotoscoped animation captures the mood of a child’s 1960s, in which a belief in progress amid the security of a booming economy might have been the closest we’ve ever come to innocence (the beatified glow of Stan’s engineer father watching the moon landing is one of Linklater’s greatest moments). In retrospect the tumult of Vietnam, assassinations and generational fragmentation would color the rest of the era, but the image of a kid dreaming himself into space while being put to bed by his parents is as moving a 60s touchstone as anything I’ve seen.
