I'm in Mary Magdalene's studio! (No, not really.)
MM's stock photos remain a constant source of inspiration and also mild nostalgia for me, although by the time I started getting into lolita, the brand was already on the decline. I especially liked the combination of OP over JSK shown in their Rose Basket JSK blog post, and I am lucky enough to own almost all of the same items, so recreated the aforementioned photo as well as and the full body (ish) stock photo (15 years later!)
Getting the posing and look right was difficult as it was just me and my camera! Every time I took a few photos, I had to get up and cross check the pose beside the original on my phone before sitting down and rearranging my skirt for a whole new attempt. So the pose has quite a lot of differences! The lighting is also much more shadowy since I use natural light from my window (on one side), whilst the original likely has some kind of studio floodlight going on. Regardless, hopefully I managed to evoke the original well enough.
Of course, as a constant nitpicker I can see so many (albeit minor) differences between the photos that I couldn't overcome...I am slightly taller, as well as less slim than the original model 😂 the JSK is actually handmade (blog post on that soon) and I believe it is a cm or two shorter than the original due to a lack of bodice fabric. I really cannot figure out for the life of me how the model managed to have so much fabric pooling at the bottom in her sitting pose, though--can I really chalk it up to body proportions?
The shoe colour is also obviously different (someone please sell me the framboise Sylphid shoes) aand if you look really closely, the background pattern is upside-down! (50% chance of hanging it the same way as MM and I got it wrong 😳)
(All clothes Mary Magdalene except JSK [handmade in MM style] and tights [offbrand])
Apollonia Kotero is an American actress, singer, and former model who shot to international fame in 1984 as Prince’s co‑star in Purple Rain and as the frontwoman of the pop‑funk trio Apollonia 6. Her two most significant performances are unquestionably Purple Rain—where her presence, charisma, and musical work helped define the film’s cultural impact—and her role on the primetime series Falcon Crest, which showcased her ability to transition from music‑driven stardom into dramatic television. Those projects remain the clearest expression of her brief but vivid moment as an ’80s pop‑culture icon.
Apollonia is royally screwed over by Medusa and the book isn’t self aware enough to actually point that out or criticize Medusa for her negligence.
First she leaves Apollonia at a festival by herself with strangers, which you could argue you can’t fault her for bc she was super drunk and not in the right state of mind, but after Apollonia was kicked out of the priesthood - even tho she tells them that her father will disown and cast her out which ig went into Medusa’s ear then out the other - Medusa doesn’t go looking for her, she could’ve asked Poseidon (who was still doing the nice guy act and been nothing but helpful) to help her find Apollonia but she doesn’t ITS ALMOST LIKE SHE FORGOT APOLLONIA EXISTED
That’s not even to mention that in real life priestesses were wealthy women who used their money for whatever they wanted and law protected them, even if Medusa didn’t have access to her parents wealth, priestesses of Athena still had SALARIES they were paid by citizens to bless their marriages and help them have children, not only that but priestesses would get a large sum of the animal sacrifice from the meat to the hides. Medusa could’ve easily EASILY used her wealth to buy Apollonia a new home to do SOMETHING to help her! But nooooo the author can’t escape the modern anglophone mindset that ancient priestesses were just like modern nuns and had no financial or political power, all Medusa does all day is pray and work in charity. A large section of the book is dedicated to her time as priestess yet none of it is interesting or accurate.
When they reunite, for some fucking reason Apollonia isn’t even upset (she isn’t allowed to be angry at poor ol Medusa only the bad guys do can be mad at her) that Medusa didn’t seek her out or try to check up on her, she just passively goes with the flow and becomes Medusa’s love interest with little build up bc we gotta have the forced yurislop so that the tumblr Medusa stans from the 2010s like this book.
Then they live the cottage core lifestyle in Cyrene and it’s less than 2 chapters, Apollonia act like the perfect housewife who just wants her husband gf to let the past go, settle down and stop seeking revenge, which is such a hetero clique lmao
Then Medusa drugs and abandons her, one woman all alone in a foreign city after she promised to stay with her and live happily ever after, yet she has the audacity to think Apollonia would do fine without her and that she made the right choice to leave her.
Apollonia isn’t a character she’s a prop she’s a consolation prize, I get so mad when ppl (especially Medusa fans) say that Andromeda was nothing but a prop in Perseus’s story then eat up or write slop like this. Euripides didn’t write one of the first plays to show two ppl falling in love on stage just for y’all to say that Andromeda is some nothingburger of a character then write characters and relationships like this.
