I had a significant eyeroll moment when Cap refused to let anyone die. “We won’t let anyone on the Island, OR in the world, die.” But that wasn’t even an OPTION at the time. You could predict the Deus at that point

Exactly. As if he had any right, or any power or ability, to make that statement. The more I think about it, the more OOC it seems for him to ever have made such a claim. I could understand wanting to save as many as possible, sure, that’s noble (and the crux of the issue being discussed, after all). I could even understand pigheaded optimism in the face of overwhelming odds as a coping mechanism, though I have doubts as to that being his go-to response. But Captain, you were a solider: you know god damned well that people are going to die, that you CANNOT save them all.

Hell, people have ALREADY died in the catastrophic aftermath of the city uprooting itself from the earth and vaulting upwards, let alone your teammates efforts to defend it from the army of killer robots, etc. You can’t look at all those crushed cars, collapsed and burned buildings, and tell me no one died. That’s bullshit. Just because it didn’t happen on-screen doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. There were casualties. There were fatal injuries. There was psychological trauma that claimed lives. But you’re not going to let ANYONE die? You’re going to save them all, every single one of them?

No. You can only hope for the best possible outcome, with the least amount of losses on your side. You can’t go into a war and expect to preserve every one of your troops. You can’t look at a battlefield, an open war zone, and say “No one is dying on my watch, we will get them all out alive.” That’s absurd. And I can’t help but think that the denial, the actual erasure of the choice of “who do we save” really just...cheapened the battle overall. Which is a shame, given how much potential there was to be something REALLY riveting and REALLY emotional.
