“Flying Home: Harlem Heroes and Heroines (Downtown and Uptown)” (1996), Faith Ringgold’s mosaic artwork at 125th Street (2/3) station, honors notable figures of Harlem’s past and makes them fly, keeping the life and spirit of these influential people alive. Pictured here flying above the Apollo Theater, which is currently celebrating its 85th Anniversary, are Dinah Washington, Florence Mills, Ralph Cooper, Billie Holiday and The Ink Spots. A selection of Ringgold’s work inspired by her relationship with jazz and the rich cultural and political heritage of the neighborhood is on exhibit at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling in “Sugar Hill Songbook: Select Work by Faith Ringgold” through March 31. #BlackHistoryMonth
✊🏿🔥👏🏿❤📷 #ArtIsAWeapon #YallGonnaGetThisBlackExcellence GOOD GAWD look at all this gorgeous Blackness from @ozwald_boateng’s recent fashion show at the @apollotheater (swipe ⬅️)!! Reposted from @black_design_collective - When British designer @ozwald_boateng announced he would be staging a fashion show about “AI,” most people assumed he was talking about artificial intelligence. But to Boateng, AI stood for “authentic identity.” And the show’s looks left no doubt about his commitment to that ideal. The looks took West African design touches (Boateng is of #Ghanaian heritage) and combined them with nods to the #HarlemRenaissance. Boateng, who primarily designs menswear, branched out into womenswear for the show. The show’s opener was 67-year-old model Jo-Ani Johnson – signaling a new way forward for his eponymous fashion label. And that’s no coincidence – he has agreed to design new uniforms for British Airways personnel, which will make him the first black designer to create uniforms for a major global airline. #OzwaldBoateng #AuthenticIdentity #BlackDesignCollective #BlackFashion #BlackDesigner #BlackFashionDesigners #BlackExcellence #Harlem #ApolloTheater #WestAfrica #Ghana #Jidenna #AldisHodge #MichaelKWilliams #BlackDesigners #BritishAirways #TraScapades #ArtIsAWeapon https://www.instagram.com/p/BxQYxI_lYvw/?igshid=17n2kbqkbdiwa
This is the Apollo Theater, built in 1913-1914. It opened as Hurtig and Seamon’s New (Burlesque) Theater, and was for Whites only, like many American theaters of the time. In 1933 it closed and Sidney Cohen reopened it as the 125th Street Apollo Theater, a Black-oriented theater managed by Morris Sussman. In 1935, Frank Schiffman (who managed another Black theater in Harlem, the Lafayette) became Sussman’s partner. Schiffman and Leo Brecher took over in 1935 and their families operated the Apollo into the late 1970s until it closed in 1976. The Apollo was also a Chitlin Circuit stop, the touring route for Black musicians at the time. The Apollo opened in 1978 under new management. In 1981, prominent Black lawyer, Civil Rights activist, politician, and businessman Percy Sutton (11/24/1920 - 12/26/2009) was the chairman of Inner City, and bought the Apollo for $225,000 at a bankruptcy sale. He presided over a $20 million renovation, including television studios (for Showtime at the Apollo, a syndicated tv show; peace to Kiki Shepard). Sutton was an intelligence officer for the Tuskegee Airmen in World War 2. He was also Malcolm X’s attorney; he found a cemetery for Malcolm X to be buried in after cemeteries refused his body after Malcolm X’s assassination in 1965. In 1983, the Apollo became a New York City Landmark and was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Apollo is best known for its use a concert hall & Amateur Night. Howard “Sandman” Sims & CP Lacey have done the work of removing bad acts from the stage. A list of people to play at the Apollo is a whole account of posts. Some musicians that got their big break at the Apollo: Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Stevie, Luther, Aretha, Isley Brothers. Jimi Hendrix won an amateur night in 1964. Since 1991, the State of New York has owned the Apollo and a non-profit, Apollo Theater Foundation, handles daily operations. Salute the Apollo Theater, a legendary place & truly unique. #apollotheater #blackhistorymonth #mrkblackhistory #jaaamaccordingly (at Apollo Theater) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuOjY8iHPxO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1nu0qhtsmu8o6
First off I’m glad that they’re getting todo something that means so much to them as a band and individuals, but I can’t help to feel a little bummed out that it wasn’t something more inclusive for all Blockheads.
I don’t know man that’s just my opinion
🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
And we’re all allowed to have one
So...
With that said I’m happy for all the OG BH’s that were there the first time around for the Apollo and are gonna get to see it happen again.
Lastly, I hope that this shit gets live streamed for like 90% of the rest of the fandom. 🙂
