Featuring Dina Sandberg
Dina Sandberg is one of our ARRIVALS oldies. She is featured on the site with a couple of black and white collages, which you probably have noticed if you're an ARRIVALS fan. One of them is Aporna. We asked Dina a bit more about her creative process... Just by curiosity.
What kind of technique do you usually work with?
I work almost exclusively with collages. I use my printer and I scan interesting stuff which I find in magazines and books. I mostly work analogue, cut and paste, and do it over and over again.
What inspires you?
Mostly when there is contrast in an image, black against white, calm and chaos, beautiful and grotesque.
How did you come up with the idea for ”Aporna” (=”The Monkeys”)?
I found an old book in the library where they had photographed monkeys and mapped their different facial expressions. I wondered what would happen if they had human bodies. Something happened when they got more powerful and extrovert - a mixture between chaos and control.
Do you have a message you want to bring with your art?
When I start on a new piece of work it’s not really working with thinking of a message so soon. But if you look back at my work, you will find a red line: women, pride, outfits, power, you get observed, not the opposite.
