Most recently Daniel had gotten very into "gardening". He got competitive about his cabbages while Max prepared to race the NLS.
Max said vegetables weren't very interesting and Daniel said endurance racing was the epitome of boredom. Max said vegetables weren't even yummy to eat and Daniel said he was going to sic Max's trainer on him, holding his phone up to his chin, joking that he was recording. Max countered he was buying a cow and Daniel laughed and said did he mean a red bull, that he'd like to see Max try to turn a bull into steaks, what was his plan, hit it with the Pista with a knifeblock tied to to the grille, and then that he would choke Max's cow to death with his giant zucchinis, and that segued into an extended monologue about zucchinis and cucumber and eggplants.
"My two perfect erdapfels—that's how you say it, right?"
"No, that's German."
"Oh. What's it in Dutch?"
"...Aardappel."
That night Max complained about the dirt trapped under Daniel's fingernails and Daniel said, "The snail's here too", and then trailed his cock all over Max's shoulders and stomach while Max tried not to giggle.
Max stood in the doorway with his suitcase. He pointed out that by the time he would have gone and done the whole race and flown back Daniel's cabbages would not even have had time to grow one extra leaf. Daniel said that by the time his cabbages grew two new leaves he expected Max to be back with the trophy.
When he kissed him he tasted like fruit, the summer.
For a long time Max had hesitated to get married because he didn't want to be restricted, slowed down, held back; but Daniel never made him stay, even though he also rarely left. Max liked to leave but also coming back. His home was bigger every time he arrived, the cats were fatter, Daniel more tan, like a raisin, more beautiful like raisins, like the sun caught in grapeskins. Worms ate all the figs to bits and still his home was bigger. He came home with the trophy and found all the green tomatoes on the wall had ripened.
struggling with this and idk if its been asked befor4 but what music do u think mello and matt are into? i could probably gauge genres but specific artists are evading me
i'm answering this in a way that's probably way dated for most people right now because m2 were born in 1989-1990 and died in 2010, and also it would be much more of an anthropological answer than a specific one based on where they were growing up.
always saw mello as being into classical music (wagner, tchaikovsky) as a studying tool and a focus tool. i think in his youth too - because he came to age when he was in the uk - he was into 70s rock, post-punk, synthwave, especially english bands. big into david bowie, roxy music, t rex. pet shop boys, new order, depeche mode, the smiths. i could see him enjoying or briefly dipping into industrial metal as well like rammstein.
matt is the classic pop-punk and nu metal imo, blink-182, green day, linkin park, limp bizkit. and ironic bands like ween, bloodhound gang, weezer. and the classic butt-rock-lite stuff like red hot chili peppers and sublime. definitely was big into eminem as well. i personally think his age makes him slightly too old to be into emo, but i see him being sort of listening to everything, and being into anything that pops up. also obviously esp in the late 2000's around the time of his death he was probably listening to vocaloid and electronic japanese anime or rhythm game songs.
i think based on where, when and how they grew up (in my personal headcanon) that would make most sense.
logging onto tumblr once a year just to scroll throygh threesmallcrows posts like a teenage girl in the 90s reading through her vogue magazines i feel so chic

dude you’re so right this is something i think about a lot… multiple times i’ve heard that matt looks like a digimon protagonist. sometimes i’m at walmart and pass by some ugly black rain boots and think of him
fortunately i’ve sort of stopped giving a shit and have just started considering all your opinions on them as the real canon
i would describe mello's canon fit as "audacious leather" and matt's as "noise" or alternatively "what that carpet doing"..
i don't have the strongest visual imagination so idk what tf they look like when i'm writing. but i insist on some body hair and some mass. i cannot contend with this skinny twink nonsense
last ask of the day but on the aphantasia thing i also am RIGHT on the cusp of a level five while my mom and dad are both ones so we r in the same boat… cursed with unable to picture scenes when i write + cannot possibly draw without a reference. writer artist nightmare
suffering and agony!! forced to (mentally) do bird box challenge every day of our lives!!
i wonder if this is random but if there’s one person (bird?) in this world that should be immune to writing envy, it is literally you …. crow you realize this right… crow please you must
i'm not and i never will be! i just finished Yoko Ogawa's Mina's Matchbox and thought it was a perfect portrait of summer! now i'm reading The Wayfinder by Adam Johnson and it's so epic in scope, and it's making me want to reread Eleanor Catton's The Luminaries which is a masterful puzzle box of storytelling so so intricate and fun! And also Cloud Atlas, and Doerr's Cloud Cuckoo Land where i (mentally) screamed Yes Yes as the pieces fell together! i have got Borges' Ficciones on hold and i'm sure it's gonna kick my ass! and last week i read some rpf about dudes fuckin' that frankly made me stare blankly at the wall afterwards and shake my head over and over!! i am gripped by the pain but also on fire with happiness!!! love you writers love you authors mwah mwah mwah!
crow do u have any advice to ease the struggle of getting an idea out of the drafts and actually executing it
i'm so sorry but i'm the worst person to ask about this, i have literally sat on ideas for years 😫 but i guess it'd depend on what you're struggling with re: execution. some quick hitters for me personally:
i'm afraid it won't be perfect <- it's never going to be. do it anyway.
i don't have a precise plan <- imo the best writing is often the stuff you didn't plan for
what if i never finish <- then don't finish. it's writing not life or death. don't publish it, or publish it and then just don't finish it.
zero inspiration <- take a break. i like to watch some relevant movies / TV to scene-set. or just reading a good book often gets me in a writing mood again.
i've worked on this to death and i'm starting to hate it <- just give up lol. move on. you haven't wasted your time, you've worked on your craft and learned what didn't work. whether you finish or don't finish you have gotten something valuable out of it. it's ok if things don't work out. most of my ideas don't! and then you can move on to the next thing!
