Tightrope
Draco’s not sure he’s entirely sane anymore. It feels like a razor-thin tightrope between awareness and madness as he blinks into existence.
It takes him a moment to take stock of his body. For one wild, disjointed second, he thinks it isn’t his. Then he feels the cold seeping into his limbs, just before the nausea hits. He has to draw shallow gulps of air as he balls his fists, fingernails biting into his palms.
It takes everything not to fall to the ground, but he’s not about to add humiliation to the list.
“How many was that?”
Blaise’s eyes are wide as he grabs Draco by the shoulders. Draco unclenches his fists and looks over at Potter, takes a steady breath.
“Draco,” Potter calls. “Fucking hell, was that sixteen jumps?”
Draco, he thinks. That’s what this has made me into.
He walks towards Harry in deliberate strides, as if confidence were a birthright, not a state of mind.
“Well, yes” he says lightly, “how many Apparitions could you pull, you think, before you’d puke, Harry?”
Harry’s eyes are bright sparks of challenge, a reckless curve to his mouth as he steps closer. “Seventeen.” **** In response to this week prompt: tightrope, by @drarrymicrofic Words: 194 (still too hard to hit 50).
I'm probably not going to watch the new Harry Potter HBO series when it comes out. Or, at least, it would take some pretty incredible reviews to get me to pirate it.
BUT. If I had creative control over this series. If I could make one (1) change to the story and worldbuilding. It would be to nerf apparation.
As a functional plot device for the DH storyline it is obviously extremely necessary. I get why it was introduced later in the series (even though all the prior books make it obvious it was a retcon.) But I stg instantaneous teleportation for every adult witch or wizard with VERY few limits is SUCH a terrible thing to introduce to a story that already has so many other creative magical transportation options. WHY isn't this a Voldemort or Dumbledore level skill??? HP wizards are so overpowered. It could have been limited to only one of the trio being able to apparate, and not well. DH does still function as a story with that change. It's like putting a speedster in your superhero movie. You just have to kill them I'm sorry. I'm beginning to think that all of my HP fic ideas are born out of my incredible need to put hard limits on apparation. (If she didn't want me to hate apparation she shouldn't have given me flying broomsticks and magical trains, I'm just saying.)
(If I had the power to make many many changes to the new HP series, I would completely overhaul the magical world's economic system. It makes NO SENSE. WHY would a post-scarcity society function like this. WHAT DO YOU MEAN there is a duplication spell. Aaagggghhhh it gives me hives. This is the source of the rest of my fic ideas.)
Can't Find This Fic!
I'm trying to find a fic and I can only remember part of it. Here's the part:
It's a wolfstar fic, pretty sure it was on ao3. It might be a fake dating au. I believe it is a multi chapter fic too.
What I remember is towards the middle of the story Sirius dates a guy (Lockhart) to get back at Remus or something after they had a falling out. They're all in apparition class and Lockhart is loudly bragging about being better than Remus. Remus then successfully apparates to Lockhart and punches him in the face.
I know it's a super short, specific scene but I'd love to read this fic again if I can find it.
Honestly, there's a 45% chance I made this all up and in that case I will be righting a fic with this scene in it because go Moony go.
