That time Dawn became a princess

No not that! (what a weird way to give her a Togekiss btw lol)

I'm talking about her friendly rivalry with Zoey.

Whenever these two enter contests, we see that Dawn tends to wear a pretty feminine outfit - a pink dress with a lot of bows. Meanwhile Zoey consistently wears more masculine outfits, like the one shown above. Which already is pretty cool, casually showing the kids watching that a person's gender expression doesn't have to be gender-conforming. However, there is one thing about Dawn and Zoey's fashion choices I didn't notice for a long time:

Zoey and Dawn are Prince/Princess coded.

Particularly by the time of the Grand Festival. Look at Dawn's outfit:

The gloves? The fancier hairstyle? The golden earrings? The petticoat? (that's what it's called right? idk fashion lol)

This is an outfit fit for a princess. I mean just compare her look to those of other popular princesses in pop culture.

In comparison, most if not all of Zoey's outfits scream Prince Charming:

Zoey is more experienced than Dawn by the time Dawn competes in her first contest, so it makes sense that she had the prince motif going on long before Dawn reached the Grand Festival. Although Dawn going from using the same humble pink dress every contest to a fancier dress for the Grand Festival could just be explained by her wanting to look her best at "the finals" of Sinnoh Pokémon Contests, it could also be seen as a way of highlighting Dawn's growth as a Pokémon Coordinator. Visually signifying that she's now at Zoey's level.

This fairy tale prince/princess motif is further implied by two things;

1 - Their special promise to meet each other again...

... at the final round of the Grand Festival.

And 2:

Ursula. Ursula not only literally shares a name with a sea witch in the English dub (yes I know Ursula is a name that predates The Little Mermaid, but given she acts as the mean girl I don't think the reference is unintentional), but the colour schemes of her contest outfits are a little reminiscent of witches. A lot of black and purple, but also red. Not really a witch colour, but is still usually considered the colour of danger.

There's also the fact that she straight up tells Zoey she wants to ruin Dawn and Zoey's promise of facing off against each other in the final round.

The "witch" wants to keep the "princess" away from her "prince."

Saw someone else point out the whole prince/princess thing with Dawn and Zoey's contest outfits and thought it was cute.

Including Ursula and the possible symbolism for Dawn's growth was all me though, cuz I'm thorough like that 😋

So I think I'll go for Appealshipping and Heattagshipping because those are the two main Dawn ships in Shining Justice.

Appealshipping: Honestly, I think both Dawn and Zoey would be morning people.

Or rather, according to DP001, Dawn is said to be a morning person. I think Dawn's sleep schedule would be all over the place in practice much like mine.

Heattagshipping: Dawn is the morning person (relatively, given what I said earlier) while Conway is not. I run in very nerdy circles (particularly computer-related ones) outside of fandom. No way Conway is a morning person lmao

🍳 Who cooks & who sets off the smoke alarm trying to help?

Appealshipping: I think Zoey would be more apt to enjoy cooking. Dawn is not a bad cook per se, but I do believe she wouldn't enjoy it.

Dawn's profile on the Japanese website back in the day said something that amounts to Dawn not being good at cooking, which is later contradicted. So I take it more to mean that she just doesn't enjoy it very much.

Heattagshipping: Again, Conway I feel would actually enjoy cooking. At the least making sandwiches, ramen, etc.

I remember seeing a headcanon a long time ago where Conway would be into old technology, and I happen to be into old tech. There's a very well-known YouTuber in that space who had a cooking channel for a bit that was mostly sandwiches, but also sometimes ramen and wraps.

I made this up on the spot too, I'm just giving my thought process lol

In either case I doubt Dawn would necessarily set off the smoke alarm. That being said, I'm sure that if she did it'd at least be good smelling smoke.

NOTP: Penguin. I actually wrote up a whole thing on the topic that goes over my feelings on this ship some time back.

I do see potential in a more toxic variant of the ship (and for Shining Justice I have entertained the idea but decided against it as it would be too dark, not that it's a happy sunshine AU by any means, for what I want) and it's weird that I haven't seen a lot of that. I probably would think of this ship more positively if I saw more of that.

BROTP: While my gut reaction is Pearlshipping, I actually want to talk about it later since really it can be platonic, queerplatonic, romantic and it'd be good by me. I'm thinking Lightrockshipping is closer to that honestly. Definitely not romantic in my view, but an idea I have for Dawn's travel arc in Shining Justice is that it is her and Brock. Depends on what I do honestly because I have a few different ideas in that regard.

OTP: Sapphirepearlshipping for the same reasons that I put when you asked about May lmao

Second Choice: Depending on my mood it's either Appealshipping or Heattagshipping.

Like, Appealshipping is just a damn good ship. How ten year old me missed it is ridiculous especially since I grew to be a massive yuri enjoyer. I don't know if there's anything I can say because my view on the ship is pretty normal!

Heattagshipping is another story on account of it being something of a "hear me out" for some. Conway, even if socially awkward, clearly seems to have respect for Dawn. I view it as an autistic4autistic mlm sort of deal and that's just. the way I ship it.

Fluffy: Pearlshipping. I do like the dynamic and I've seen so much good Pearlshipping content that I've come to grow to really like the ship in this particular way. Also the average Pearlshipper honestly has a damned good read of Dawn imo. Even if it isn't my OTP for Dawn, it's easily in my top two Ash ships lmao

Angst: If you want I can make any Dawn ship angsty! /j

Okay in all seriousness, I project my trauma and mental illnesses upon Dawn (two reasons: first is similar trauma and second is that she was the character when I was 10 so I see her as a peer if that makes sense) so any of the above can work as angst.

However, my personal view of Fancyfashionshipping is very angsty and toxic, at least within the context of Shining Justice.

But really any ship can be angsty if I try hard enough.

Poly ship: Okay so even though I've mentioned Dawn twice in my favorite poly ship for other characters... oh okay there's a fucking ship name for Kenny/Dawn/Zoey but not for Conway/Dawn/Zoey wow that's fucked

Granted I see the structure as more Dawn is with both of them but Conway and Zoey aren't with each other per se but I see them both as Dawn's primary partners in Shining Justice if that makes sense.

Weirdest: I have the funniest fucking crackship idea on account of [half my interpretation of Mirsha Grelinek of neopets dot com](https://bookofages.jellyneo.net/characters/1405/) is probably inspired by Dawn and then things later feed back into how I perceive Dawn it is a really funny ship

I don't seriously ship it it really is hardcore crackship territory

Also where else am I going to mention that I'm responsible for that particular furry character getting a girlfriend (my greatest accomplishment) on this blog? I'm proud as fuck of doing that.

And also Mirsha's the reason why I know about the Ainu people because I legit accidentally coded her as Ainu in a roleplay I did like 12 years ago and now I am trying to write Dawn as being of Ainu descent lmfao
