That time Dawn became a princess
No not that! (what a weird way to give her a Togekiss btw lol)
I'm talking about her friendly rivalry with Zoey.
Whenever these two enter contests, we see that Dawn tends to wear a pretty feminine outfit - a pink dress with a lot of bows. Meanwhile Zoey consistently wears more masculine outfits, like the one shown above. Which already is pretty cool, casually showing the kids watching that a person's gender expression doesn't have to be gender-conforming. However, there is one thing about Dawn and Zoey's fashion choices I didn't notice for a long time:
Zoey and Dawn are Prince/Princess coded.
Particularly by the time of the Grand Festival. Look at Dawn's outfit:
The gloves? The fancier hairstyle? The golden earrings? The petticoat? (that's what it's called right? idk fashion lol)
This is an outfit fit for a princess. I mean just compare her look to those of other popular princesses in pop culture.
In comparison, most if not all of Zoey's outfits scream Prince Charming:
Zoey is more experienced than Dawn by the time Dawn competes in her first contest, so it makes sense that she had the prince motif going on long before Dawn reached the Grand Festival. Although Dawn going from using the same humble pink dress every contest to a fancier dress for the Grand Festival could just be explained by her wanting to look her best at "the finals" of Sinnoh Pokémon Contests, it could also be seen as a way of highlighting Dawn's growth as a Pokémon Coordinator. Visually signifying that she's now at Zoey's level.
This fairy tale prince/princess motif is further implied by two things;
1 - Their special promise to meet each other again...
... at the final round of the Grand Festival.
And 2:
Ursula. Ursula not only literally shares a name with a sea witch in the English dub (yes I know Ursula is a name that predates The Little Mermaid, but given she acts as the mean girl I don't think the reference is unintentional), but the colour schemes of her contest outfits are a little reminiscent of witches. A lot of black and purple, but also red. Not really a witch colour, but is still usually considered the colour of danger.
There's also the fact that she straight up tells Zoey she wants to ruin Dawn and Zoey's promise of facing off against each other in the final round.
The "witch" wants to keep the "princess" away from her "prince."
idk. Is this anything?
Saw someone else point out the whole prince/princess thing with Dawn and Zoey's contest outfits and thought it was cute.
Including Ursula and the possible symbolism for Dawn's growth was all me though, cuz I'm thorough like that 😋

The Cosmic Spirit is still a mystery
For as much as I think the storybook added to Super Mario Galaxy 2 is decent, I'm a little disappointed we didn't get an origin for the Cosmic Spirit. To this day we still don't know exactly what she is. I'm sure there are people that are okay with that, a lot of fans prefer to see Rosalina and things associated with her as mysterious. I'm sure even more people don't really care considering the Cosmic Spirit has literally only shown up in one game, but to anyone who does, I wanna ask:
What do you think the Cosmic Spirit even is?

And the Winner is... Option 3!

Not just saying this because it won, but this is also my personal favourite headcanon of what the Cosmic Spirit is. It gives Rosalina more of an active role in Galaxy 2, makes sense for Rosalina since she often gives guidance to others, and it would be a legitimately cool ability.
Plus, I'd argue the Cosmic Spirit's Japanese name indicates that either option 2 or 3 is the case. I'm of the opinion that how things are worded in the original language of any source material, unless stated otherwise, overtakes other versions in terms of what's canon if other versions contradict the original language. And in Japanese, the Cosmic Spirit isn't called the Cosmic Spirit, she's called "Helper Witch."
That name does seem to further imply that the Cosmic Spirit is connected to Rosalina at least in some way, considering Rosalina is sometimes associated with witches, especially in Japanese (a Toad wondering if she's a witch, her being called "the witch of the comet" in the Japanese version of Galaxy 2's storybook, her Halloween costume in Mario Kart Tour.)
However, there are things I really like about the other interpretations too!
Take option 1 for example, for those who have seen MLP FiM, I like the idea of the Cosmic Spirit being like the Tree of Harmony - projecting a physical form of its consciousness modeled after a female character it deems as worthy of embodying its spirit. For the Tree of Harmony, that was Twilight, and I like the idea of it being Rosalina for the cosmos itself.
I even like the idea of the Cosmic Spirit just being Rosalina's cosmic clone/counterpart, specifically because of what that would say about Rosalina.
On one hand, if we consider Rosalina as the Big Good of the Mario series (as a parallel to Bowser being the Big Bad), I like the idea of her being so pure of heart that even her cosmic clone/counterpart isn't antagonistic, unlike all the others we've seen.
Or perhaps it's because Rosalina's devotion to the cosmos is so strong and has persisted for so long (literal centuries if not millennia) that the cosmos / Cosmic Rosalina recognizes this, so the lack of antagonism is a show of respect if not affection.
Or perhaps Rosalina has refined her cosmic powers to such an extent that she managed to tame her own cosmic clone/counterpart. She's "one with the universe" in a sense.
On the other hand, this is probably the least likely option of the specified four to be the case. Unlike with Cosmic Mario and Cosmic Luigi, the Cosmic Spirit's voice is not a distorted version of Rosalina's, she just straight up has Rosalina's voice. Whereas the other Cosmic characters have distorted voices of their respective counterparts. She also doesn't need a Cosmic Comet to appear, unlike the others. Plus, she seems to have Rosalina's actual crown, wand, earrings and brooch, whereas the other cosmic counterparts (including their "clothes") are entirely made of... space? I guess?
So it's likely that the Cosmic Spirit isn't meant to be Cosmic Rosalina / a cosmic clone at all.
I don't think anyone else on this site (heck, on the entire internet) cares enough about the Cosmic Spirit to write this much about it lol
Still, I would like to learn what exactly it is one day, and I like to think that we will. I mean if somebody had leaked that we would have gotten a continuation of Rosalina's Storybook AND a physical release of it (in the same year) a year ago, I would've reluctantly considered it fake, but look where we are now.

Rosalina and the Fourth Wall
OK so usually if a character in the Mario Universe breaks the fourth wall, it's for comedic effect, during character selection, or once the game is over so they're not actually onscreen (like when Mario thanks the player for playing or Luigi saying "Bye everybody!" after the credits roll in Luigi's Mansion 3). Basically it's done in way where you're clearly not supposed to take it seriously or as anything more than cartoon logic.
But Rosalina does so onscreen twice in Super Mario Galaxy.
In the first instance she's not thanking the player, she is simply stating that they'll see the cycle of universe for themself. The game isn't over yet, this is just happening in the story. Even when she does thank the player, she never acknowledges that she is within a game. She doesn't say "Thanks for playing!", she just says "Thank you..." before claiming that she will watch over the viewer(s).
These doesn't come off as a joke, or as a way for the developers to speak to the fans through the characters, these feel like things that Rosalina herself is actually saying within the story.
Which is why I headcanon that Rosalina can break the fourth wall in-universe, not because of cartoon logic, but because her cosmic power has grown so much in the 1000+ years she's been alive, that she's developed awareness of universes beyond her own.
And with this, we can officially declare the winner of the Mario kart World Outfit Tournament to be:

Movie Rosalina isn't Rosalina
One of the less talked about aspects regarding how the Galaxy movie fumbled Rosalina is her dialogue.
In the games, Rosalina speaks very formally, and often tends to give what she says a sense of grandeur. Some examples being:
"May the stars shine down on you."
"Disaster has struck us."
"The strongest force in the universe is a heart that never gives up."
"I'm afraid Mari has left this path."
"No battles are more intense than those we fight inside ourselves."
Meanwhile in the movie, her lines are a lot more... generic:
"You messed with the wrong--"
"No one hurts my kid!"
"I knew you'd come for me."
These are lines you've heard in a million other things. Not only are they painfully generic, but these aren't lines you give to a calm and reserved character like Rosalina. There's too much attitude and aggression. You could give these lines to Movie Peach (minus the mention of a kid) and they'd fit her just fine as well. I guess this criticism doesn't really apply to the third line, but my issue with that line is the context (the "guardian of the cosmos" / "most powerful princess in the universe" shouldn't need to be saved.)
The closest thing I think her movie counterpart says that something her game self would say is "The universe will never forgive you!"
And even then... what does she mean by this? Is the universe literally alive? This line would make sense in the games with the Lumas transforming into celestial bodies and the existence of the Cosmic Spirit, but the movie establishes neither of these things. So.... what does she mean by this?

My 3 Guesses as to how TADC will end
Ending 1 - Day After Day After Day
It's like an hour of the humans' day to day life in the broken circus. No escape, no "final battle", no Caine. It's just them adjusting to their new life. They use their abilities to conjure to fix up the circus a bit and find their own ways of stimulating their minds. This episode will be seen as mundane, it'll subvert the expectation of being an "epic finale", and instead choose to use its runtime to really sell the idea of the members of the circus having a stagnant, but meaningful, life.
The most exciting part will be the very end when a new human enters the circus, and as they freak out Pomni, surrounded by her friends, will extend a hand towards the new human and tell them everything will be okay.
Half the fandom will hate it.
Ending 2 - And in Your Reality, if I don't know how to love you...
I made a post about this already, but to go into more detail, they find a way to bring back Caine so he can fix the circus before the abstractions get them, or before they fall into the void, or before Bubble f*cks things up even further, idk. Character development ensues. Eventually Pomni (plus maybe Kinger, Ragatha, etc.) convinces him that if he's not good at his "function", he can just... do something else. Something that actually makes him happy. He can decide for himself what his purpose in life is.
After all, if Gummigoo could decide to defy his function as an AI, why not Caine?
At a later point (assuming Jax doesn't abstract or die) all the humans use their combined abilities to conjure to make an exit (let's say Pomni convinces Jax to leave idk idrgaf about him), and Caine... lets them go. He knows that this is what will make them happy, and finally has realized that letting his own selfish desires, insecurity, and ego control his actions hasn't gotten him anywhere but his own death. Before they go, Pomni wishes Caine luck. They may not be friends, but there is no longer hatred between him and the humans.
The show ends with Caine alone in the circus. This should be his worst nightmare, but instead he feels... okay. He has a lot of thinking to do.
Ending 3 - And we'll always be in this together
Like my previous guess, Caine gets brought back to fix the circus and eventually calms down through the power of Pomni's Therapy Session, or some form of honest conversation where Caine actually listens (turns out being killed isn't great for the ego). However, in this ending, after everything's fixed up and they kill Bubble there is still no escape.
This is kind of a fusion of Endings 1 and 2. Maybe there are no more adventures, just day-to-day life for the humans and for Caine. The humans (maybe minus Jax) focus on just being there for each other, and Caine distances himself from them to ponder what he wants his purpose in life to be.
Maybe they still do adventures but Caine will actually take suggestions, since they still need something to stimulate their minds. Maybe the humans conjure up their own adventures whilst Caine takes a "vacation".
The point is that the humans and Caine come to some form of compromise.
You could insert the new human bit from Ending 1 here, the obvious difference being Caine is present, but he's less in your face than he was when Pomni first arrived. Maybe there's even a montage of new humans joining.
Will the humans find an escape after all?
Will they ever come to love Caine like he always wanted?
Will they ever actually do any circus stuff?
In this ending, none of that matters.
Everyone is at peace with who and where they are.

Well I was kinda sorta close with Ending 3 lol 😅
As for my thoughts on the finale... I liked it well enough. I wish like half the cast got to do more, but I like how the show ends. I was genuinely so happy for Caine, seeing him truly become a part of the group. I knew Gummigoo's story was meant to indicate at Caine's character arc.
Jax's fate is grim but I think they serve as an effective cautionary tale, especially as a contrast with Caine. Anyone can change for the better, but only as long as they're willing to. Reach out towards others and embrace who you truly are, because if you don't it could cost you everything.
I wish I had more to say about Pomni, the main protagonist herself, but... she really doesn't get much aside from chasing after Jax here. Kinda wished there was more of a focus on her being the glue that keeps everyone else together (to contrast how she didn't really want anything to do with anyone in the pilot) and becoming more of a leader, but oh well.
At the end of the day I'm glad my faves Ragatha and Caine (and everyone else minus Jax but those two specifically) are thriving!
These days It's usually a little melancholy to see a show I like end, regardless of the ending's actual quality. I wouldn't say I'm as attached to TADC as I was/am to Animaniacs or MLP FiM, but still.
ngl since this is the finale to an unexpected global sensation, and this might be the last time I write about TADC somewhat extensively on this blog (or at all), and my biggest post ever was about TADC, so I want the final line(s) of this to be particularly good.
I don't really know how to end this.
But if I learned one thing from this show -- and I would hope so -- it's that maybe that's okay.

Another awesome little detail I noticed about Rosalina's Storybook
I wish I had noticed this by the time I had done my first big analysis of the storybook, but oh well.
Rosalina is often (not always, but often) referred to as "the little girl" in chapters 1-3:
"the little girl promised Luma" "At nightfall, the little girl borrowed her father's telescope and peered into the sky. " "the little girl sighed" "The little girl couldn't stay mad after hearing this." "The little girl shook the sleeping Luma awake" "Exhausted, the little girl sat down with a flop"
But as of chapter 4, the chapter where she takes Luma under her care, essentially becoming his mother (for what's implied to be at least the second time, read my other analysis for more)...
... now she's just "the girl", and stays that way for the rest of the story. The story no longer alternates between the two, she is never referred to as the "little" girl again (you can take my word for it, but by all means I encourage you to read or re-read the story for yourself just to check):
"One night, the girl dreamed about her own mother." "Ever since the girl took Luma under her care" "while the girl sat sipping tea" "a sudden thought popped into the girl's head" "one day the girl became sad again" "The girl and the Lumas were proud to call it home."
She's not so little anymore. Her adopting Luma is meant to be a sign of maturity, so this subtle change in the way the story refers to her indicates her personal growth (and presumably also physical growth), long before she's actually drawn to more overtly look older.
You'd think I'd have run out of reasons to love this story by now, but I guess that's the power of good writing.
