The tricky shenanigans behind a stealthy Apple Keychain attack
The tricky shenanigans behind a stealthy Apple Keychain attack
Lily Hay Newman for Wired:
In early February, an 18-year-old German security researcher named Linus Henze demonstrated a macOS attack that would allow a malicious application to grab passwords from Apple’s protected keychain. “You know, the ones ‘securely’ stored so that no one can steal them :)” he wrote. Dubbed KeySteal, the attack called attention to the fact that the macOS keychain makes a…

“When life puts you in a tough situation, don’t say, ‘Why me?’ Say, ‘Try me’.” -Miley Cyrus
You can have a bad attitude about something or think positively about it, but you actually can change how you feel about it. I know you probably think you can’t since they’re emotions and sometimes, you can’t just snap and tell yourself that everything’s going to be okay.
Right now, I’m at the mall, on a two-hour wait to see if the Apple wizards could wave their magic wands and fix the Keychain on my MacBook Air. Honestly, I was a little nervous from the drive over here (because you know how iffy I am about driving) to confronting them about the issue. So you can imagine how I’m wondering if this two-hour wait is worth it because what if it’s unresolvable? What if the service is terrible? What if the appointment takes like two minutes and then they send me away, even if the situation is all better?
I wanted to do this sooner, but my parents were out of town and they weren’t comfortable with me driving too far without them. They’re not helicopter parents. I’m just that inexperienced at driving.
When the problem started on Saturday, I kept getting frustrated because I knew I couldn’t do it on my own. Luckily, I found a way to make it hide for a few days so I could still write and watch TV on it without it getting in the way. “Dude, I forgot the password to this! I can’t log you into your email accounts! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?!” Me: (Types in password) Keychain: That’s not it. Me: But it IS it. Keychain: Nope, wiped from my memory. Try again.” It even forgot my iCloud password. Luckily, I don’t have the issue with my iPhone and iPad so I can still check email and text.
Purpose: The point here is, don’t be too afraid to take the reins if you’re in a situation you think you can’t control. Think about the positive aspects of getting it done or, better yet, the good parts of the process of getting it done. Then, once it’s over, you’ll be glad you did it. I took control even though I was stepping out of my comfort zone. I’m STILL out of my comfort zone. But I’m still content that I’m here. I made it because I have a reason to be here: so I don’t live forever with the annoyance of the stupid Apple Keychain.
