Choosing the Right College for You by: Katy Zart
There’s a lot that goes into searching for the perfect college. Although this process can be time-consuming and stressful, it can also be a lot of fun. There are many factors that go into finding the right college, including (but not limited to): school size, location, cost, academic and extra-curricular programs offered, college type, job opportunities, scholarships opportunities, and admission requirements. Most students probably don’t look into all of these factors, but they can be quite helpful when making a solid decision.
There are public schools and private schools. Most of the time, public schools will have a larger student body when compared to private schools. This means that class sizes will most likely be larger, which is part of the reason why private schools usually pride themselves in having a smaller student to professor ratio. If you’re interested in being surrounded by more people, then public schools might be your thing. If you like a smaller community and more attention from your professors then a private school might be a better environment.
Location is very important for some students. Some kids want to be close to home, limiting the radius of potential college campuses, and others want to get as far away from home as possible. If you are super close to your family and want to be able to go home on the weekends, you’d probably prefer to stay close to home. If you are looking for a change of scenery and a different atmosphere all together, it may be better to look somewhere further away.
Tuition costs, the amount of scholarships awarded, and job opportunities offered can be one of the most crucial deciding factors when choosing a college. Money is a limited resource for many students and families. Being able to afford a college education is a huge deal, and that’s why so many people spend so much time weighing their options. Scholarships and job or work-study options are always a bonus to lighten the cost load!
Academic and extra-curricular programs can be strong factors as well. Some students are specifically looking for a certain academic program. For example, a popular major at my school is Natural Resources. Students in Wisconsin looking for a program in Natural Resources have two in-state options which are Northland College and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Students also look at colleges because of their extra-curricular programs, usually athletics. Many athletic programs have scholarships they can offer to recruits. An athletic scholarship can be a major factor for many students when they are deciding on a school.
A college’s mission can help influence students one way or another. For instance, to use another Northland College example, some students choose Northland because of its environmental mission. Most students probably don’t care as much about the college’s mission, but it can be very important to some.
Admission requirements also play a large role in choosing a school. These requirements can often make or break the students chances of getting into a school. It can be heart breaking to a student when they have their heart set on a school and are denied based on grades or a poor application. You should look at the admission requirements of potential schools and create a list of safety, match, and reach schools. In other words, apply to some schools you should DEFINITELY get in to, some schools where you are a great candidate but it could go either way, and a list of schools that are out of reach based on numbers (SAT scores, grades, etc). Having diversity in the schools you apply to should help ease the admissions process. And remember, try not to get your heart set on one single school, especially a “reach” – there are plenty of great schools out there and you will find one that is perfect for you!
When it comes time to apply to college, consider all the factors that many effect your decision, but most importantly, have fun! Searching for the right college for you is an exciting time in your life so try to enjoy it as much as possible.
