11 for the wordless ways to say I love you for Nana and Dee maybe? :0c
I was gonna go with asoiaf AU, but i’m currently in the modern/college au zone.
11. Telling them a dumb joke just to see their smile.
He met Dee when he first came to the University and that one frat boy mistook him for a freshman — or someone who could be interested Greek Life — and attempted to convince him to join his. Dee’s fraternity house was right next to this guy’s, so she had had a front row to the whole spectacle of him making Anatole lose his patience, to the point of ranting the guy’s ear off.
After that Dee had stopped him, predicted he would become one of the campus cryptids, introduced herself and said: “So, not quite interested in Greek Life then? What are you studying?”
Anatole snorted: “Oh, no. I am only interested in Greek vices, the more unspeakable the better,” he winked at her. “I’m a phD candidate. Linguistics.”
“The more unspeakable—?” Dee had asked, confused for a second, before letting go a soft ‘oh’ and dissolving into laughter when she got the joke.
“I’m Anatole,” he said, “it’s a pleasure to meet you, Dee.”
They simply clicked. There was something about their coming and goings which made them easy for both of them to be around the other, it made it easy to open up, to help around, to simply ask if the other wanted to run an errand with them and maybe grab a cup of coffee. Conversation came easy to their lips, so did harmless gossip.
With becoming confidantes, it also became obvious to them when the other was feeling sad. Their particular ways of frowning, a slouch on the shoulders — or a tightness in them. A grimace, or a distant look in the eye, they knew what it meant, even if they didn’t always knew what produced it. The first time any of them realised the other was feeling off was a disconcerting experience, almost an offensive one — how dare sadness bother such a person? Dee was like the golden poppies growing in the most peculiar of places, like a rosebud in full bloom. How dare sadness creep into Anatole’s frown? He who was like the sun.
Both of them had taken it upon themselves to remind the other there were reasons to laugh. The joke about Greek vices had unknowingly become the cornerstone of their tradition of telling each other stupid jokes as a distraction and reminder that bad weather did not last forever.
When Anatole entered the coffee shop that morning he found Yessi and Ari whispering back and forth to the other, giving little glances to the table Dee was sitting in, frantically going over her notes.
“Buenos días,” Anatole told them. “Are we worried about Dee, I feel like you are.”
“We are,” Ari said, “what can I get you by the way?”
“She said she had a problem with the animal shelter so she had to cram because she lost a whole day of studying,” Yessi said. “I tried to get her to relax but it didn’t really work.”
“A chemex, Ari, thank you,” Anatole said, looking over at Dee’s table. “Hm, I see. Let me try?”
“If you succeed the coffee’s on me.”
Anatole snorted. “You know damn well I’ll leave the price for it in the tip jar anyway.”
He walked over to Dee’s table, announcing his presence softly, placing his hand on her shoulder, asking if he could sit with her. Dee grunted a non-committal response, and Anatole observed her for a couple of moments, before he spoke.
“Dee, what is it?”
Surprisingly, she answered him: “What if I fail? I don’t want to fail this I’ve worked hard enough! But there was a problem at the shelter, and no one else could cover it so I had to,” Dee continued to say, words tripping over the other.
“Hey,” Anatole said, squeezing her arm. “You’re smart, you studied, you’ve got this. Breathe in for a moment and find a way to relax or you won’t be able to even read the test properly… and if you do fail, and there’s no extra credit you can take don’t worry about, we can always overthrow the Government, create gulags and send your Professor there.”
Like flicking a switch on, Dee began laughing. It was contagious and Anatole began laughing with her, as she clutched her ribs.
“Besides, we’ll kill two birds with one stone, America has got to go anyway.”
Dee began crying with laughter.
