This is a perfect time to read the brilliant and unforgettable graphic novel(s) Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, about growing up in Iran during and after the Iranian Revolution, and the rise of the oppressive theocracy that persists to this day.
Both graphic novels are available free online (Persepolis vol. 1, Persepolis vol. 2)
It also was adapted to a wonderful film (co-directed and co-written by the author) which is available to watch for free on Sundance Now (sign up for the free trial)

Taking up Japanese as a side project for myself has reminded me of something.
So like a long time ago I had a professor that I absolutely adored. She happened to be Japanese American. She grew up speaking Japanese at home but never really spent a lot of time in Japan. She mostly spoke with other Japanese Americans and read books.
So one day early in her teaching career there’s an exchange student from Japan who’s having a hard time understanding a concept so she explained it to him in Japanese and then he looked absolutely rattled. Like in shock. Pale.
This is how she learned that the way she speaks Japanese makes her sound like a gang member.
Japanese doesn’t exactly have cuss words in the same way as English does but imagine that the nicest professor you’ve ever had pulls your paper over and says “Okay listen here you little piece of shit I’m gonna fucking explain this to you. Violently.”
This (studying in Chile for a year) is more or less how I realized my two PhD-having, tenured professor expat parents raised me to speak the most disrespectful and swearword-riddled version of Spanish possible (with plenty of ancient slang I didn't know was slang thrown in). It was like:

As a reminder, he's suing Caroline Wallner, one of his accusers, for breaking her NDA. Not for libel. He's saying she shouldn't have told anyone about it, not that she lied.
The author says Wallner broke her NDA by sharing her story with the media, including with New York Magazine.
He doesn't need the money. He's risking the Streisand effect. He is punishing Caroline, he's trying to intimidate other victims who have signed NDAs to scare them into continued silence.
He is no friend to women, to the LGBTQIA+ community, to anyone quite frankly unless he thinks they are of value to him.
Share the story. Put it on Facebook and bluesky and whatever else you're on. Make it clear what a horrifying person he is. Tell your friends. He's paying Edendale a fortune to try and cover this up. Make this hard for him. Make it cost him money.

Under videos and articles about how the hantavirus outbreak is possibly spreading for person to person and they’re having to do contact tracing for several sick passengers who flew publicly and now there is a French guy who possibly caught it from sharing a plane with the elderly woman who died, there are my fellow Americans saying shit like “Maybe I’ll take up violin this lockdown.” or “I don’t want to do the whole quarantine thing again :(” it is so cute that you think that we will have a lockdown to inhibit/slow viral spread. It’s adorable that you think this administration will take any sort of measures to stop the outbreak of a (far more deadly than COVID) virus, especially since they’re refusing to acknowledge the measles outbreak. The U.S. is no longer part of the WHO. The right has spent the last 6 years sowing the seeds of medical mistrust and toxic individualism to the degree that a large portion of the population will never comply with masking and quarantining mandates under any circumstances. Lockdown was terrible for the general public’s mental health and terrible for the economy but it slowed the spread and protected the vulnerable. These anti-science troglodytes coughing on everyone else at Walmart and dying will be even worse for our mental health and even worse for the economy. Let’s hope it stays in Europe and South Africa because if it spreads to the U.S. under this administration, the devastation will be catastrophic.
I know it's been about a week since op made this post but I want to add some things for the sake of information:
There's no "possibly spreading person to person", it will spread person to person. This is because the variant of the outbreak is the Andes Hantavirus which has both rodent to person and person to person contagion. There is no evidence about person to rodent contagion yet.
While I am aware this is about the US government, it is unscientific to call it "far more deadly" than COVID when you have no evidence of it, just a general sense of sensationalistic anxiety because of these Pesky South American Rats. Even if that is not your intention.
Hantavirus is a well documented disease. It is not even remotely new. Treating it like it isn't is because you're doing it from a global north bias.
Hantavirus has a lesser degree of contagion than COVID. It is also entirely preventable. This doesn't mean there couldn't be another pandemic: however, we do not know that. Hantavirus symptoms mimic other diseases, and if you're not someplace that is actively aware of Hantavirus it might be dismissed.
Chile and Argentina are leaders in the study , prevention and management of Andes Hantavirus. If you want sources on how to deal with it, start looking for our sources. If there's not an English translation, they apply the translator of your choice. If you live in a country not familiar with Hantavirus prevention, this is a manageable disease. It is proven to be so. You can highlight the political reality of the USA without also falling into un-scientific and frankly racist/xenophobic rhetoric. It's okay to not know things.

You know whenever I see ‘feel-good’ stories about trans men being in women’s spaces - I really sit and wonder if those spaces allow trans women. Or is the only inclusion they do of trans people when they are still enforcing the sex binary onto trans men.

Andes Hantavirus isn't rare bc it's so difficult to catch it. It's rare because it's a local mutation not found anywhere else. It is well studied and well documented. Hantavirus prevention is also a thing that is both well studied and well documented.
You will not have found Andes Hantavirus anywhere in the United States of America until Now. Or at least it would've been rare fr. You guys have other variants.
Andes Hantavirus transmits human-to-human, not just rat-to-human like the variants in the USA in so far. There is no evidence it can be transmitted human-to-rat, but no evidence is not the same as disproven. So we can't say whether that happens or not.

What was happening in that cruise ship was irresponsible outdoor practices from one of the tourists or poor sanitisation.

One last addendum. Like I said, I do think a great degree of Fearmongering is about these being Exotic Rats From South America, but we don't know how this is going to escalate worldwide. Irresponsible management of any disease can have disastrous consequences. One way to be irresponsible about it is by treating it as a thing no one knows about, which is what inspired my addition and a post I made in my own blog. If anything, this is entirely preventable: air out spaces and clean things with bleach. No alternatives. Bleach. Masking is important but secondary: clean your house. Just don't mix bleach with random things. Chile and Argentina have very comprehensive guides on managing Hantavirus. If the pages don't have 'in English' options, use a translator of your choice.

If you see influencers, commentators, or anyone posting on social media about how little it is known about it, or that in the face of another potential epidemic/pandemic, remember to mask: 1) We know a lot about Hantavirus. Your gringo country does not. Let this be a rat-shaped reality check on the world being vaster than your country. You know the ones I'm talking about; 2) Yeah, masking is considerate.
