She is being chased by a Weeping Angel (which might explain how she time travels later on), just as we are starting to learn there is something coming that is about to end the universe.

This end is called "the flux" and there are some reminders of the crack on Amy's wall and the events during the Wedding of River Song when all events of all time were happening all at once. There's an orbital observation station called Rose; the Sontarans are hanging around and the only other race that seems to know what is happening are the dog people (remember RTD's cat people?) who have already seen the flux coming and are out to rescue the human race (and take them where, we don't know, the universe is ending).

The new companion, Dan, unless there is a Ruth-Doctor-like twist to his character (his introduction is much like hers in The Fugitive of the Judoon), has zero charisma and not much in the way of acting chops (unless this is meant to put us off guard for something later). He seems to only be here so far to introduce us to the silly dog-like race that is species-locked to humans to save them from catastrophe (very RTD). His "rescue" by Yaz is pure RTD/Moffet, and the Doctor working with the dogs (and her terrible puns/insults at them) is much like material we've seen in The End of Time, closing 10's era.
