✖️ Day 7: Why I CX Back in 2015 at @dccxrace I did a few videos called, “Why Cyclocross?” They were extremely short interviews posing that one question to those in my immediate racing community. They’re exactly what you’d expect and have seen for this entry for #aprilcxchallenge—friends, community, self-challenging, friendly competition, beer, etc. However, I did manage to grab a quick answer from none other than the racer pictured here, @benberden1. His response was incredibly eye-opening, and one I didn’t expect whatsoever. For him, cyclocross was a job. Obviously, as a professional your purpose is to race to make money but the way he presented it, it was strikingly different than the vibe we associate with the sport here in the states. For him, it was simply a way to make money, just as we think of working at the bike shop or an office job. He was good at it, so he pursued it. This was followed by an admittance that he was tired of the wear and tear of it all and would likely be retiring soon. I stood there, kind of in shock from the response, thanked him for his time, then wandered back to the course. I never posted the video. Guess I felt it was something incredibly personal, not something he was ready to reveal officially, plus I also felt I was too small of a media outlet to make it public. Perhaps I’ll edit it and post one of these days. Definitely worth it for a striking contrast to the typical response. (at DCCX) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-x2zXBHX3U/?igshid=spea7e0jedz5
