Who am I ?
Today I went to see April Lee Hernandez speak at my college. It caught my attention because she was Latina. I didn't know that it involved domestic violence as well. I didn't know this would have had the impact it did. She spoke about how she got to where she is, where she came from, what she experienced, her dreams, her downfalls, her struggles. I was so amazed how a woman could stand before a large audience and speak of how for four years she was beaten by a man she loved. A man she thought loved her. He abused her physically. I couldn't imagine standing before an audience and saying that. The way she projected her message wasn't so we could pity her or have sympathy. She stood before us to give us hope, to push us, to let us know we can do what we want. She went into college thinking she wanted to be a nutritionist and ended up as an actress. Then she asked us "Who are you?" And for the first time I was called on in a huge audience. It could've been anyone but when she looked at me. She really looked straight into my eyes and said "Who are you?" I was shocked. Of course this could mean nothing at all but for some reason it felt right. It felt like this was life waking me up. I responded with "I don't know." I really don't know who I am, but I'm going to figure it out. Today I haven't gotten my mind of that. I need to change things in my life for myself. I'm always speaking of acceptance and loving yourself. I need to do it the right way. Find my weaknesses, my strengths. I need to dig for what's stopping me. For what keeps me going. I will do this. I will be the exact person I want to be. Thank you April. I'm glad I was able to speak to her afterward. She was so sweet and she's so beautiful. I let her know how she inspired me and I thanked her. She looked at me and said "Thank you mama, you're so beautiful and remember find that inner you. You'll find it. Please find me on Facebook and email me your progress. I want to know." Of course she could be bullshitting me but this felt so genuine. I'm determined.
