Repost from @altpoprepeat • In 2021, how has skateboarding flipped its white male image and still stayed true as a rebellious alternative to mainstream sport? According to APR's latest guest, Olympian @nnieguglia, it's diversity. The difference with skateboarding is that it's an individual sport - so anyone, anywhere can join in at anytime. And, yes, while skateboarding’s ethos is defined, in some ways, by resistance to authority - it inherently is a suited for all skaters. But, not all skaters will have the same experience. Even though the first professional skateboarder was 60s Patty McGee, women have generally been excluded from the sport. There was a time when X-Games only televised the male finals from the sport, brands weren't sponsoring female athletes and parks weren't always a welcoming space for female skaters. With Skateboarding making its mainstream debut at the Olympics this year, it's time for brands and skate corps to try and not lose its rebellious past to help further the sport and support the growth of diversity. Diversity is an evolution, and now that it's here, we can't sell it out.
