Another amazing place to visit which is open to the public but also serves as a private home is Apsley House. This grand Georgian home was the London home of the first Duke of Wellington. The original house was built by Robert Adam in 1778 for Lord Apsley for whom the house is named. While the address is 149 Piccadilly, it’s often referred to as Number One London since it was the first house that travelers saw when they visited London. It was purchased by the Duke of Wellington’s brother in 1819 but financial difficulties forced him to sell it to his brother who needed a London base for his new career in politics following his military career and famous victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. He hired architect Benjamin Dean Wyatt to carry out renovations that created the beautiful art filled interiors and exterior we see today. @houseapsley1817 actually shares a connection to @galleriadoriapamphilj that I posted yesterday. They along with the @metmuseum are home to portraits of Pope Innocent X by Diego Velázquez. Definitely put Apsley House on your must visit list for London. #apsleyhouse #london #habituallychictravels (at Apsley House) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci7s1b2L7nO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
