The Arab Lobby: How the Tiny Kingdom of Bahrain Strong-Armed the President of the United States
In my latest piece for TomDispatch.com, I examine the way Pentagon arms and bases shore up anti-democratic rulers in the Persian Gulf and help fund and support an “Arab lobby” whose influence in Washington can even overcome presidential desires. In the specific case of Bahrain, I analyze Defense Department documents to reveal that the Pentagon has provided that country’s security forces with helicopters, armored personnel carriers, and millions of rounds of ammunition, ranging from large-caliber cannon shells to bullets for handguns.
