A post about Arabelle I made on my main got two reblogs with notes and it actually made me think about Arabelle as the Destined Ally a lot (as I often do whenever I think about CoS) and how much love she tends to get in homebrew, but also what I feel like might be overlooked RAW implications of her as the ally. Most DMs that run her run her with seer powers or as a Spellcaster Sidekick or both (hi), but I kind of wonder what the intention of using her over Vasilka, one of the RAW most useful DAs is. There's quite a few really weird DAs (i'll get to that too) but something about Arabelle really stands out to me in that regard and it makes me really wonder what other DMs of tumblr do with her if they like to run her.

RAW stat-wise, Arabelle is awful. She is either the worst or second-worst DA, and she is only competing with that slot with Clovin because Clovin becomes an active detriment and burden if he's not liquored up. The only things she can meaningfully do is cast the Evil Eye 1x 24 hours (not even long rest) with a 10 DC. She can use Vistana Curses, which are actually very powerful (especially if DA Ez is willing to use them) but the psychic backlash will almost assuredly instant kill her if she tries to use it. Meanwhile, Vasilka, who is the same card is a CR5 monster with a lightning immunity so your Wizard can literally spam Lightning spells and actively buff her without a care in the world.

I keep wondering what the RAW intention of using Arabelle instead of Vasilka as the DA is meant to be, because you literally have to chose between one of the most powerful DAs and one of the worst ones if you draw the Innocent. I think it might be her connection to the Vistani? Like, her father is essentially the leader of all the Vistani allied with Strahd: unless you completely homebrew it out, Luvash is one of Strahd's most important allies. I think the idea might have been that maybe through Arabelle you can break that alliance and convince Luvash to ally with the party instead?

I'm curious, does anyone have any thoughts about what like, the RAW idea behind going with Arabelle as your DA is supposed to be? There's quite a few DAs that are also very weak (special props go to the dead guy you have to revive) that mostly use Commoner stat blocks, but there's something about Arabelle that seems particularly out there. What do you all think? Was there meant to be something like a specific tie to the Vistani in mind, or was it just pure RP flavor?

She's currently in the castle because the party talked to her whilst a disguised Strahd was with them and he was Intrigued by the mystery child the party seemed to Actually Like And Trust.

I hope they realize that the next time they encounter her, she could be Strahd in disguise.
