ʾAʿūdhu bi-ʿizzati Allāhi wa-qudratihi min sharri mā ʾajidu wa-ʾuḥādhir

عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَاصِ أَنَّهُ شَكَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَجَعًا يَجِدُهُ فِي جَسَدِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " ضَعْ يَدَكَ عَلَى الَّذِي يَأْلَمُ مِنْ جَسَدِكَ وَقُلْ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ثَلَاثًا وَقُلْ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ: أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ ". قَالَ: فَفَعَلْتُ فَأَذْهَبَ اللَّهُ مَا كَانَ بِي. رَوَاهُ مُسلم

Uthman b. Abul ‘As said he complained to God’s messenger of a pain he had in his body, and he told him to put his hand on the part of his body which was sore and say three times “In the name of Allah,” and seven times, “I seek refuge in the might and power of Allah from the evil of what I feel and what I fear.” He said he did so, and God removed his trouble.

Muslim transmitted it.

3rd century CE inscription in Nabatean Aramaic at the southwest church of Umm el-Jimal, Jordan. Nabataean Aramaic was an extinct variety of Aramaic used by the Nabataean Arabs in the regions of the Jordanian East Bank, the Negev, and the Sinai. Attested from the 2nd century BCE in inscriptions and a small number of legal texts, it continued in use for centuries after the Roman annexation of the Nabataean Kingdom in 106 CE. While largely Aramaic in structure and vocabulary, it shows significant influence from Arabic and other North Arabian languages, as well as some Greek loanwords. Over time, the Nabataean script was increasingly adapted to write Arabic, eventually developing into Nabataeo-Arabic, the earliest form of the Arabic script. Its phonology, morphology, and syntax are only partially reconstructable but broadly align with other contemporary Aramaic varieties.

In classical Arabic poetry, plus-sized women were sometimes praised with the expression ُخَرْسَاء الأَسَاوِر: “she whose bracelets are silent.”

This was not an insult, but a subtle form of admiration and coquetry. The image is delicate: when a full-figured woman wears bracelets, they fit closely around her wrists and do not rattle or clang. Their silence becomes a metaphor for softness, fullness, and feminine beauty.

The Mamluk-era poet Kamal al-Din Ibn Nabih captures this aesthetic in his verse:

بِيضٌ سَوالِفُهُ لُعْسٌ مَرَاشِفُهُ

نُعْسٌ نَواظِرُهُ خُرْسٌ أَساوِرُهُ

Her temples gleam in radiant white, her lips are honeyed dusk.

Her glances drift in a drowsy languor, her bracelets rest in silent hush.
