Arabic Lesson of the Day
Many people have been asking me to teach Arabic, so I’m going to start with small lessons daily of just one word or phrase.
If you don’t read Arabic, don’t worry. I will provide transliterations for everything and avoid using number scripts. If you would like to learn how to read Arabic, here is a short alphabet course from Stanford University that I think is simple but thorough.
Arabic speakers learn our own regional dialect, often referred to as عامية [a’amiya], and a standard dialect called فصحى [foos-ha]. Whenever possible, I will teach you a phrase both ways.
Today’s word: Girl
Modern Standard Arabic: فتاة [fataa]
Mesopotamian dialect: بنت [bint]
Phrase: I am a girl.
Modern Standard Arabic: أنا فتاة [ana fataa]
Dialect: أنا بنت [enay bint]
